Different Latencies on same song in 8 vs. 7

Hi. Newbie.

I'm a film composer and just got Logic 8. I've been a Logic user for years.

A strange thing is happening. I was working on a flugelhorn part and thought I'd make it my maiden voyage in Logic 8. As soon as I started I realized I had excessive latency through the EXS24. Thinking it might be part of the sample, I went to another EXS track in the song, a vibraphone. Latency there too. I checked the settings. 64ms. This is through a Symphony card and I don't remember ever having latency problems in 7.

I checked the exact same song in 7 and indeed there was no latency on either the flugel or the vibe samples. The settings were the same, 64 ms.

Restarts, PRAM, did all the usual suspect things.

This is 10.4.10 (I tried Leopard on another drive, but both Logic 7 and Logic 8 crash within seconds of launching, so that took care of using Leopard for me).

I've discovered I can't use 8 because of this problem, which is frustrating because I'd like to learn it.

Is this just pilot error on my part? Is there something I need to tweak in 8 to make it work like 7?

Thanks in advance.

if you have been a logic user for years, like myself, you might not like logic 8 compared to previous verisons of logic.

reports of logic 8 "sounding different" are rampid all over the internet. I would not like to invest my money in a program that will make my songs sound different after I spent so many hours mixing it down.

logic 7 and logic 8 are 2 completely different programs.

if you want to spend your time wondering why things are different in logic 8, then go right ahead,

if you want to use the app that professionals have used and relied on throughout the years, go back to logic 7

stop trying to make logic 8 grow on you. Why would you be using logic 8 over 7 anyway, when logic 7 is more powerful?

Is the audio safety buffer on in L8?

"audio safety buffer"

I'm embarrassed to say I'd never even heard that term. Maybe that's the problem. Can you tell me how to toggle/adjust it?

Whoops, should be "i/o safety buffer." It should be a checkbox right underneath the other buffer setting.

Thanks, Matt. I'll give that a try.

Humberto, you are not helping anyone. If you do not like Logic Studio 8, no one is forcing you to use it. Those who choose to use it don't need your solutionless complaining.

There are many reports of logic 7 and 8 songs not living happy together. After installing logic 8, my logic 7 ultra beat samples disappeared.

Logic 7 doesnt load its autoload anymore.

logic 8 sounds different.

These are my REAL problems that I have found using logic 8 and 7 together.

also, logic 8 uses more CPU then logic 7, something many people might not know, so thats why when the user uses logic 7, there is no more latency

Toggling that has no effect at all.

Any other ideas?

Thanks much.

As an experiment, try this - start a new, blank project in 8 and create a channel strip with the EXS24 flugelhorn patch on it. Do you have the same latency?

There must be a setting somewhere left to be found, or else a difference between starting the project in 8 vs importing it from 7. I have LP7 and 8 and on my computer they have the same latency with the same driver settings.

BTW, CPU usage does not affect latency. If CPU usage is too high, the audio will break up and Logic will halt playback, but latency per se is not affected. The same buffer size at the same sample rate is always the same latency.

how about dumping 8 all together and staying on 7?
