danika
Whenever I initiate step input recording Logic creates a one-bar region. If I enter notes beyond one bar I can see the notes in the piano roll editor and event list editor but not the score editor. After I finish I have to manually expand the size of the region. Is that the way it's supposed to work? Also, the documentation says that to initiate step input recording you just need to activate the midi input in one of the editors. The only way I've been able to do it is bring up the step input keyboard and play at least one note on the keyboard. Otherwise I cannot do step input from my external keyboard. Again is that correct? Randall Voth
I've just now been playing with step input and have noticed the same problem. You must first click a note on the step entry window before the midi keyboard will enter any notes. I'm sending this in as a bug to the Logic Feedback. Unlike danika's experience, my MIDI region grows when I input notes (Logic 8.0.1, OS X 10.4.11, Mac mini).
David Nahmani
Use the pencil tool to create a MIDI region, double-click it and turn the Piano Roll in step input mode.
Randall Voth
Thanks, David, this works perfectly. We have therefore learned that a midi region must already exist for step input with a MIDI keyboard to work. This is not the case with the Step Input Window, which creates a region if one does not exist. Now that I look at the manual again, this is implied (Open the Midi Region in an editor and turn on MIDI In) but not very clear because it is possible to open an editor without a region being selected. Spangfract
For me the only thing that works every time is to create an empty midi region with the pencil tool..it defaults to one bar, but you can then drag it from the right end to make it longer. Open the piano roll or score editor for that region...then make the event list the window with the focus (make active by clicking on it once) Any of the other methods occasionally work, but most of the time The notes all pile up as one chord.
