filmdude23
I am a independent filmmaker that is plain tired of dealing with pro tools le. But would like to know if Logic Pro 8, is a good tool for sound design and sound mixing because I would really like to integrate this tools, because I already have final cut studio. thanks! David Nahmani
Yes, Logic Pro 8 is a great tool for sound design, scoring movies, mixing... Logic Suite comes with Soundtrack Pro which is also a great post production and sound design tool and integrates with Logic. But it would be useful to know why you are frustrated with PTLE and make sure Logic will do what you want: different softwares have different features. gsilbers
basically Digital performer and logic have that corner of the market taken. as for sound design; the onboard synth and preset instrument dedicated to film are very , very good. and u can beat space designer convolution to make some weird and exotic ambience. you can get soundhack for free but its not real time like space designer. mattsb
Unless you are actually scoring a film using sampled instrments or creating textures using a synthesizer (particularly structure), you are probably better off sticking with pro tools, which is often much easier to use when editing stock sound effects or recording foley. carrmar
Why is Pro Tools "better" at those tasks? Logic is more than capable. I am honestly just curious...

bfrederick
logic 8 has a number of bugs / needed fixes too allow it to function well as a tool to score to film with. there are a large number of glitches having to do with beat mapping and tempo changes, along with production halting wait/load times for the built in sample library. it still blows my mind that logic MAKES you install over 34 GB of content to the system drive.. in my experiences with the numerous computers ive run it on, it just runs like a dog. im sure people will disagree.. but logic 8 needs lots of work to be a work horse worthy of using on project after project. i cant keep it open long enough to finish one. logic 7.2 on the otherhand IS a stable workhorse, and although the tempo changes look a little funny, they still work perfectly. just my .02 -still loves 7.
carrmar
But why is Pro Tools easier to use? I have never come across long load times from sample libraries. Are you referring to a third party sampler that conflicts with Logic? Does Pro Tools have a beat mapping equivalent that would accomplish the same thing without glitches? I hardly ever use beat mapping, so I dunno.

Yeah - it's still too early in the game to rely on Logic 8 the way we can with 7 when doing film and tv - as it's not 100% predictable like 7 is. I know exactly how and why L7 will bomb.. and there's no time or chancing my/and client work on 8 just yet.. as it's a completely different beast with it's own unrelated set of problems. So until then, I just dabble in it when there's a few minutes to spare.

lcheadle
I'm hesitant to upgrade to Logic version 8 because I'd be paying twice for Soundtrack and Compressor which I already purchased in Final Cut Studio 2 a couple of months ago. Anyone else want to commiserate with me? Who do I complain to at Apple?
fader8
Rephrase: Why is Pro Tools "easier" to use? carrmar, "Easier to use" isn't accurate either. ProTools does have features that streamline the workflow of audio professionals who have to work with large multitrack audio projects day in and day out under hard deadlines. That is its main advantage. For example, Logic doesn't support VCA style track subgrouping, (this requires a 3rd party plug-in) markers tied to screensets, etc. Those features don't necessarily support a creative workflow, which is what Logic is more about, but they do make the job easier for those guys and gals who have to sit 8 hours a day in an editing room prepping television shows. The OP is an independent filmmaker so I doubt these features would be of much use, and besides, LE hacks off many of those features anyway. It's probable that his definition of "Sound Design" has little to do music. With film work, that term can take on many definitions. For complex sound design in a creative workflow context, Logic accels. For spotting stock sound effects, either app is fine, but if that's all I did all day then PT would be my choice. That is funny because Logic 8 did not MAKE me install anything except the program. I am still deciding on which drive I am going to install the content but for now I do not have it installed at all. I don't suppose you have heard of the "alias" concept.
