Recordings coming out low and weak when burned to cd

Recommended Posts

How do I get my recordings to burn on cd at a normal volume? I have the master fader at 0.0 (in the middle). When I play them back on the cd,the recording sounds low and far away.

The process I've been using to burn them is to bounce them to my desk top the drag them over to iTunes and burn them off of there

For a start, insert the Adaptive Limiter plug-in in your main stereo buss and play with the gain knob.

You may also want to watch your RMS values using the level meter as the last plug-in in your chain. For contemporary sausage-waveforms it's not unusual to have values of -10db RMS or even higher.

Cheers!

before you get any plug in you should really read up on and understand what mastering is.

due to many reasons the same levels and dynamics you hear in logic, or any DAW is never going to be the same as when you have a final product. generally speaking mastering is reserved as a separate process post-mix. it is the "last step" so to speak. once you have a project that is mixed and all depending on the style, level, and nature of the dynamics present in the song via compression, natural signal, etc. once the mix is finalized it needs to be mastered in one form or another to be "loud(er)." you have to understand that all commercial music is mastered to more or less uniform levels depending on the genre, style, and taste. mastering also ensures that the dynamics like a strong/tight low end, or a smooth high end stay that way when made louder. so comparing mixes right out of logic to ANYTHING commercial volume wise is a bad idea. all those commercial mixes were mixed at lower levels and then they got their "balls" in the mastering stage.

now since mastering is a separate process it can get costly so if you are going to have projects you do in logic it is important you understand the concept so that you can do a "poor mans mastering" which is fine as long as you don't over abuse it. meaning if you just put a slight compressor on the whole mix or a limiter if you are going to mix files and not get them mastered by a dedicated mastering engineer just for the sake of people hearing your songs you can make them slightly louder. i for one don't even bother with that and just label it "unmastered" this way there is a preamble for whoever is going to listen. i just do this out of practice because i have a firm theory that works most of the time for mixes i do that i know will get mastered and that is don't mess with any dynamics on the master bus and output. i leave plenty of headroom for mastering.

but don't take my word for it, it's like 9am here and early (by my standards lol) and my thoughts may not be 100% organized, so just do a google search and there is plenty of information on this topic.

I would type 50 paragraphs but this is just as easy.... I would really focus on the tools and their purposes more so than the actual process of mastering.. In all reality your looking for your MIXES to translate well in other listening environments.

By the sound of your question your not looking to master but to have a well balanced mix for playback purposes.. I've been there and I'm still working to get my mixes to completely satisfy me.. Well I guess I'd never be satisfied but hey.....

This is a thread I started when I ran into the same problem... Lots of great help and tips from pro's around the world.. Got me off the ground.....

ok,so how do I get my track to the mastering section on LOGIC.

there is no mastering section. and it's not like you could do it on your own if you don't understand it.

logic comes with a few plug ins that can sort of get you where you need to be. the compressor, limiter, adaptive limiter, and various other plug ins in the dynamic group.

i would say place a compressor on the output channel on the mixer and play around with it.

I STRONGLY urge you before you do anything, esecially since you are asking such direct questions, to take a few hours to read and understand how it works because you can't just go "ok, i'm going to get a plug in and make it loud"

your mix will sound worse and very very bad if you don't use the dynamics processors correctly.

Well there is a mastering suite, but I agree If you don't know anything about mastering and the purposes of the tools than I wouldn't take the chance of ruining the mix... Be patient and expirement with the tools before doing surgery Doc..
