SoundProof Studios
I'm looking to purchase a better than decent vocal compressor to chain to my duet... First of all is it possible to run hardware such as compressors, Eq's and etc to my duet and how would I go about it???? And second what are some better than decent models.. My price range would be between $500-$700...
SoundProof Studios
Has anyone had any experience or heard anything about this model.. http://www.guitarcenter.com/ART,Compressors---Limiters-Signal-Processors.gc
marcel72
What are you using for a preamp? Does the Duet have insert points? In order for a compressor or limiter to be effective at controlling dynamics (the usual use for such a thing when recording vox), it needs to be between the preamp and the A/D converters. If you're using an outboard pre and going line level to your Duet, you would put the comp or lim between the two. If you're using preamps in your Duet (!), you would need to have insert access. sayenex
I use the FMR RNC (really nice compressor) it's pretty nice for the money $200 or there's the RNLA http://www.fmraudio.com/
marcel72
I use the FMR RNC (really nice compressor) it's pretty nice for the money $200 or there's the RNLA http://www.fmraudio.com/ Good suggestions in that price range. I have both, although I find the RNC way more useful than the RNLA. Limited by being unbalanced only, tho, as you can't run them inline with balanced equipment. SoundProof Studios
Do either of U know if the duet is capable of hooking up a compressor for vocals.. I am currently using the duets pre's.. Not sure what ya mean by insert points..
marcel72
OK, I just looked at Apogee's site. You can't use any outboard with the Duet. It has no insert points, and no balanced line level (or any line level, for that matter) inputs. Record your vocals with plenty of headroom, and do whatever you can with them once they're recorded, I guess.

SoundProof Studios
Figured everything out.. I need to buy a channel strip such as the Universal Audio LA 610 and use those pre's instead of the duets.. Thanks for the help though...
nagal
There are balanced line level inputs on the Duet. You connect to the XLR inputs and in the Maestro software you change the gain mode to XLR Line or something like that. I was told this is how you bypass the pres on the duet. SoundProof Studios
Has anyone heard anything on this model or used it?? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Focusrite-TrakMaster-Pro-Channel-Strip-103145827-i1125408.gc
scrofani
It's not the cream of the crop like a Univeral Audio product but I am a fan of the Presonus Eureka channel strip for exactly these things. It's eq section is its weak spot but you might have no use for that part . . I do love its compressor. The overall sound is just clean, there's no real mojo to it. Some say that's a good thing. sixstring20
Has anyone heard anything on this model or used it?? http://www.guitarcenter.com/Focusrite-TrakMaster-Pro-Channel-Strip-103145827-i1125408.gc Ye, I got the original Trakmaster and it's really sweet (for the money). I used it with a Studio Projects C1 and a great voice.. (not mine i hasten to add) and got very nice results, sweet highs and warmth too. Obviously add a zero to the price and you could get a nice Avalon or something like that, but for my money this gets a huge thumbs up... to a certain degree it's the performance that really counts. I heard of a guy using a crappy old Creative PC mic to record an album ... seemed to work for him.. lol..(not so sure tho) I really don't think you need to spend wads of money on the finest gear to get great results. Just my opinion!
