bigwayne56
Hey All, Just a little help here on how to spend some of my hard earned cash. I am looking to get some new plugs to add to my LP8 and other assorted ones I have now. I was looking at either the Waves Platinum bundle or a UAD-1e Expert or UAD-1e NEvana pack. Just wanted some other opinions but mine. I am on the fence basically cause I really don't like Waves as a company but damn if they don't make some great sounding plugins!! Any and all comments greatly appreciated... Wayne
fader8
I am on the fence basically cause I really don't like Waves as a company but damn if they don't make some great sounding plugins!! Well, I think you just said it. They make "some" great plugs. Unfortunately, the way many of their plugs are bundled you're stuck paying for mediocre ones too. There are a lot of alternatives now. I was trying out their API collection and liked the 550 emulation but would have never used the other plugs in the bundle. URS makes an emulation of the same EQ, arguably better than the Waves version, and I could buy just that plug-in at a fraction of the Waves API bundle price. So I did. I do have some Waves plugs but I've really tried to be selective. That can be really hard to do. On the other hand, UAD is great. Get a card, buy the plugs you want and not the ones you don't. With all the makers out there making great plugs that you can buy individually, there's no need to buy huge bundles only to find you'll end up using a handfull. jaytranzmit
Yes it's very tricky with Waves that you can end up with a lot of plugins you might not use with some of the bigger bundles. I've gone for the Renaissance Maxx and then will pick up the Musician bundle 1. Gives me the main one's I wanted, and although the musicians bundle has some duplicated, it works out cheaper than buying the ones I do want that are in it singly. marcel72
Waves is also notorious for making you pay for stuff that any other company would give you for free, like updates and various (VST, RTAS) formats... I have the UAD plugs, and a card. Some are pretty good, for plugs. Nice to be able to choose what you spend your money on. Be aware, tho, that some of the best ones are very processor intensive, so don't plan on loading up a session with Neve strips on every channel, or anything. And their latency, as a result, is pretty massive, so they are a no go if you're tracking (even on other channels). True of any heavy plugs, especially card-supported ones, I guess. You can work around it, but I'm just saying...
fader8
And their latency, as a result, is pretty massive, Yup. The Precision Multiband has a 17,408 sample processing delay at 44.1. That's creepin up on half a second. I think that's a record!

stephentrask
The L3 Ultramaximizer from Waves is fantastic. Untweaked, it sounds better inserted on the Master Bus than any of Logics mastering channel strips, to my ears. Nothing is sweeter than Altiverb. Sound Toys is quite remarkable. Buy the package or get Echo Boy, and a couple of others. Really great.
fader8
The L3 Ultramaximizer from Waves is fantastic. Yes, but what's strange is that it's included with the L3 Multimaximizer, but not the L3-16 Multimaximizer, which is more expenive and the one I want! So I'll just stick with the L2 for now. The UAD Precision Maximizer is getting mileage here though.
bigwayne56
Hey all, Thanks for all the replies and/or ideas. I have gotten a lot of good ways to go and a big thank you to you all. One more if y'all don't mind. What about the Duendo, Liquidmix or External Powercore units? Any have major problems with Logic 8? Thanks, Wayne
