jhk607
Hello, I just got the Virus TI synth and am having a couple of problems with setup in Logic 8 that are not covered in the Virus manuals...first, this (like all multi-channel audio instruments) is setup on 16 audio objects in the environment, each set to its own MIDI channel, but all with the same instance of Virus TI plug-in. Can someone tell me what I'm missing in order to be able to separately automate volumes, etc for different parts? Right now my fader operates all 16 channels at once and not sure what to do... The second issue is with importing environment layers...I've setup a Virus TI layer in a sequence and want to be able to import it for use in other sequences, but when I do, the imported layer is completely wrong compared to what I originally created. Might this be a Logic bug? Thanks so much in advance for your help- Josh
grimepoch
For question one, you cannot automate the volume slider to differ all the sounds because in the way it is insantiated, all 16 tracks actually come out one output. Thet fader controls that output. Now you can use the two additional outputs if you want. What I do is create automaton that controls the volume parameter of the plugin itself (the slider in virusControl) and this solves that problem. Apparently, the next version of the OS will have even more outputs available which is GOOD. I don't use the environment so I don't know there. I can say this, another thing you might do is create a slider in the environment that transmits the controller for volume for each track. Create 16 of them and then you can actually drag them into the arrange window and have sliders for those tracks!
jhk607
Thanks very much, that makes sense - but how in Logic can you create automation/write automation to the plugin fader as opposed to the channel fader? Thanks very much in advance- Josh
grimepoch
The ways are many 1) You could turn on automation mode for that track (A key) and the select that actual parameter to be automated. 2) You could set the automation mode to 'latch' and just move the slider a bit while playing the song, then set it to read. Now, when you open up the automation, you will have created some automation on that parameter that you could just rework then. 3) You can use the quick automation assignment. Look up 'Automation Quick Access', with this you can use a knob or slider on a keyboard to control automation for selected tracks. Hope something there helps
midiatim
The individual patch levels on the earlier (hardware) Viruses could automated (in the synth) using CC 91.
cliffm
Here's another virus question: Is it possible to use Logic's insert effects on the seperate virus channels? I've tried setting up a bus, but that applies to all 16 channels. The turorial mentions using outs 3&4, but I don't see a way to send a virus channel to out 3 & 4. VC control seems very limiting in this way. Hopefully 2.7 will resolve some of these issues.
puyan
well to setup output 3&4 you must create aux track in the enviroment. What I would recommend is the virus tutorial song comes with perfect environment setup. Just open that and export the environment to ur set up. As far using logic's insert effects on seperate virus channel's is impossible because there are only 2 usb outputs. For automating volumes in all different 16 tracks of the virus it can be done as someone mentioned earlier. If you click "A" to activate the automation menu. Select Virus TI partl 1 for example, scroll all the way to the bottom and u'll see Vol CC08. That's ur volume fade for each track. hope that helps
gsilbers
on the common page there is where you configure the ouputs. so you select usb 2 as your second out and move the slider to that ouput.
jhk607
thanks all for your responses and an update - for automating different channels separately and simultaneously, I actually programmed a fader on my controller to be "expression" - this seems to work and you can just leave "volume" on that channel at unity for instance. Still having some USB connection problems, probably going to get an internal USB card for the computer...
