leopard or tiger ??

I have been following the 'Core Audio Overload' issue very closely on this and Apple's forum, and I'd have to say that 80-90% of people having performance problems are on Leopard systems, and 80-90% of people reporting good performance (myself included) are on Tiger systems.

The choice in my mind is very clear. Tiger!

I would like to begin working with LP8 on a Mac Pro 8 core, currently using OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger). I Don't have Leopard yet, and I'm not in a big rush for it.

I have been reading about the problems other users are having with Core Audio overlads, is this mostly a Leopard issue, ? I would not want to deal with any core audio issues in Tiger, or Leopard (when I upgrade), so ...

Should I go ahead, install LP8, and work in Tiger, or wait for another LP8 or OSX Leopard update ? How stable, and efficient is LP8 running on Tiger (10.4.11) ?

As far as Leopard, I think I will wait for another month or two... No need to rush into Leopard, unless it offers lots of stability, and performance, for now it does not seem to offer either one.

Hopefully Apple will offer some OS Leopard, and LP8 updates very soon to solve the current issues with LP8.

Your feedback would be very appreciated.

Thanks.

Hopefully I will not be one of the 10-20 % Tiger users with this issue.

An update should be on the horizon, hopefully very soon. I think Apple needs to fix this ASAP !

Thanks for the feedback.

Most of those on Tiger reporting issues are either on older machines, or are using some setting or plug-in (like BFD) that is know to be a cpu hog. I have a MBP 2.33 core 2 duo machine, and it runs Logic really well. With an 8 core mac you should have no problems.

Good Luck! :D

OK ! That's very good, and comforting info. Now I'm looking forward to install and begin working with Logic Studio/ LP8.

Thanks, and Have A Very Nice Day !

Hello everyone,

I've been using 8 since it's launch,hence under Tiger,then,early January,I upgraded to Leopard.

I've been having no issues so far,but I have to say that I use Logic by itself,I don't have any 3rd party plugins.

To me it seems that Logic 8 runs more smoothly under Leopard, and it does make sense if you think that both developments (8 and Leopard) were taking place simoultaneously.

Cheers

Macbook 2.16GHz/2GB

OS 10.5.2

Logic Pro 8.0.1

Live 6.0.10

IK Multimedia Sampletank 2.5XL, Miroslav Philharmonic, Sonik Synth 2

NI Battery 3, Absynth 4, FM8, Massive, Pro-53

Novation V-Station

Cakewalk Rapture

Spectrasonics Stylus RMX

All plugins are patched to current versions.

Smooth as butter, though it just got that way for me.

Leopard 10.5 sucked for me, since many of the above plugins needed patches, and 10.5 had a few runaway processes. Not really workable... but good for testing.

Leopard 10.5.1 saw the advent of the first round of Leopard patches for the above plugins and LP 8.0.1, but 10.5.1 still had some runaway processes. It was workable, though.

Leopard 10.5.2 saw the second round of Leopard patches and got rid of the runaway processes that I still allow to run.

It's still early to upgrade if you don't have a reason to. BUT, I wouldn't downgrade if you have a Mac that comes with Leopard, particularly if that decision is going to cost money.

I have little doubt that the next 6-8 weeks will see the final free upgrades to plugins that need to be patched to work on Leopard, and very likely 8.0.2. It probably won't be more than a few weeks past that before 10.5.3 is released.

That's clearly a guess, but I'm fairly optimistic about it, even if I turn out to be off by a few weeks to a month.

Personally, I'm not changing anything else in my setup until the world has properly embraced 64bit, and Leopard is a solid step in that direction... more so than Tiger, at least (and don't even get me started with Vista 64... worthless, that is).

Hope this helps,

- zevo

(PS - I do still have one plugin that hasn't been patched: Cakewalk Dimension Pro... but I barely ever used it, and now don't use it at all, even on my Windows DAWs... it's a good plugin, but it doesn't crush my world being without it)
