bob0172
I got a few questions about logic node, using it in a DAW 96khz environment. I realy need extra horsepower for logic and i though Logic node might do the trick, but its hard to find any experienced users on the www. my questions are: -How stable is it? Is it safe to use, so without weird glitches, crashing etc?? Is it possible to play 3d party plugins and instruments?? How are the 2 computers connected? By fww or network??? What happens when a noded projected is later openend without the noded computer? Does that create problems? Or are all plugs automaticaly assigned to the main daw?? Ive got a macbook core 2 duo,,, which host computers are suitable to hook up. or doesnt it matter which type of mac i use?

noisenet
Bumpity Bump Also, is it feasible to use a Mac Mini for this task? Removing all not necessary tasks, would the Mini be powerful enough to add any discernable improvement to performance?
mulholland
bob0172, if you search a bit on this forum you can find a bit of information on Logic's distributed processing (the manual also is a good resource). That said, I agree there is a general lack of information about Logic's distributed processing on the net. My experience has been mixed when it comes to distributed processing and logic. I currently use a MacBook (2.0C2D/3GB/200GB (7200RPM)) with a Dual 1.8 G5/2GB RAM as a node. (Note: my experiences are with Logic 8.0 - 8.0.1) As far as 3rd party instruments, there is no support for this. Some 3rd party effects are supported, but they have to be installed on both machines and my experience with this has been mixed at best. Now, I am not sure if this sub-awesome experience with 3rd party plugins is a function of my host being Intel and my node being PPC. That said, the following 3rd party plug-ins work to some extent: - ArtsAcoustic Reverb - works great as a noded plug - Ohmicide - works great as a noded plug - WaveArts - mixed results; give them a while to connect to the node and they work nicely (sometimes they do not connect) - Sonalksis SV-315 - mixed results; takes a long time to connect to node (30-60 seconds) if it connects at all, but works fine if it connects. With respect to the Logic plugs, again my results are mixed. Generally, they work well, though I've noticed that I usually have to start, stop, and restart playback for everything to be in sync the first time I node a plugin. Additionally, I sometimes get noticeably different sounds from some of the noded logic instruments (you can hear a clear difference between the noded and non-noded version of the plug). From time to time I have to restart the node box when logic fails to consistently connect (this is once a month at most). Again, I am not sure if any of these issues are due to my host being Intel and my node being PPC. Now, all that said I wouldn't trade the node setup I have. It does a nice job of offloading a non-trivial amount of the work from my MacBook. I'd be curious to hear anyone else's experiences here as well. taxiway01
Wow! First time (after quite som research) I hear anybody with a real analytic comment on the use of distributed processing... I'm a little disturb by the result, though. So: - Could anybody confirm the sonic difference between a noded and a "native" (for lack of better term) plug? - Besides the obvious answer "RTFM", do you REALLY have to install 3rd-party plugs on both machines? I'm really considering a Mac Mini for noding my ppc 2x2.5 G5, due to the Lynx AES16 pci card I'd have to re-buy to upgrade, which I'd hate... Thank you! Thank you! yeah you do have to have the third party plugs installed on the node and the master machine as for audio quality - there should be no difference
