Requesting honest reviews for a few products

Recommended Posts

I've scoured around, and thought 'Why not ask my Logic buds what they think?'

Basically, I'm applying for a few grants to start my business (audio post as well as score composing) and wanted some honest reviews of some things I'm looking for. Feel free to let me know if there's a better product (for the same price range, of course, otherwise, there's ALWAYS a better product) out there for what I'm looking for.

First off...

1) Sound Devices 722 Digital Sound Recorder (for location sound) - Anyone? After reading a few reviews, I'm pretty confident that this'll be quite the nice piece of gear to have while out and about recording audio for film.

2) Sennheiser ME66 - Short capsule Shotgun mic... anyone own one? Thoughts? Comparisons? Dislikes?

3) Komplete 5 - It looks like it's pretty much the all-in-one deal, and I love soft synths, samplers, and amp modelers. I've used guitar rig before and loved it.

4)Mackie Control Universal - Really interested to know who has it and what you think.

I really really appreciate any and all info you can give me. I'll let you know how my shopping goes, if and when I get the money!

as far as the ni stuff goes, i already owned battery 3 but am really interested in reaktor

so the other day, i was looking through their site and found that you can download great demos of most of the plugs

there's no mention of a time limit....the only restrictions are that you have to un-instantiate and then re-instantiate every 30 mins (no big deal)

no tweaking of presets can be saved and no data will be saved along with the logic file...what this means is that each time you load the logic project, you just have to navigate back to the preset used...or better still, bounce to audio

what you do get is the full range of presets...no really

i am demoing absynth 4 (includes all banks from previous absynths also)

fm8 (really like this...comes with complete fm7 banks)

reaktor 5 (this comes with about 50 % of the instruments.....

and is really blowing my mind..gonna have to buy)

pro 53 (loved this in my illegal 'cracked' cubase/windows days)

massive (haven't spent much time with this)

guitar rig 3 (great...have tried with everything BUT guitar :))

so...i urge you to be your own reviewer on this lot

me...well...reaktor has won me over...even if i never learn how to create my own instruments, there are loads of great ones included....there is also a huge ni community of users with access to over 2000 custom built reactor sets....mmmmm

and i really like fm8.......

therefore komplete , at the latest prices, is a no brainer.....for me , at least

let's hope money improves

good luck

p.s battery 3 is great too

:)

Strongly reconsider and get the 702T instead. The timecode features are invaluable if you want to do film work.

This is just the capsule. You'll need a K6P power supply with that. You should be able to find the set for about 500 USD. Nice mic for the price.

Don't forget about all the incidentals, booms, socks, cases, cables, etc. These things can add up too!

I thought the 722 had timecode stuff? at least, the review I read showed that it did... maybe i misread..?

Edit - Found the review here -> http://www.transom.org/tools/recording_interviewing/200613_sound_devices_722/

"They offer a range of recorders: the 744T is the top of the line, with 4 simultaneous record channels to an internal hard drive and CF card, as well as timecode capability; the 722, which features 2 channels of audio recording to its internal hard drive and CF card; the 702 which is similar to the 722, but with no hard drive – it records to CF card only; the 702T which is identical to the 702, but with timecode capability. "

It looks to me that they all offer timecode, save for the 702T. Am I wrong?

I love the NI Komplete package, but, I ABSOLUTELY would get KORE 2 to manage it.

Agreed, although it can take a little while to get used to the "peculiarities" of the beast, shall I say?

I use a Senhieser 416 shotgun mic for just about everything, including VO in a booth. LOVE IT muchly.

Awesome mic Dave. Might be just a "little" out of Biff's price range though. But there's usually some good used ones floating about.

haha..yeah..Kore has it's little quirks, but, even just as a general librarian and controller, it's fab..

I also keep an AKG 414 around for general use. And a Rode NT as well...LOVE it..nice and cheap, and great sounding.
