gengis
Hello all, Im diving into Logic and wanted to test some of its editing abilities and found that if I import a 44.1 file into Logic while my convertor is set to 96k ill get the sped up version of the track. I understand why this can happen but what I dont understand is that when I do the same in a program like Peak or even Itunes I never have to switch the sample rate on my convertor for things to sound right. Excuse my ignorance but Im definitely missing something and I cant understand why this is so and would like to know. Thanks in advance for any input on the subject! Holger Lagerfeldt
I'm not sure why Peak acts that way. But I can tell why it doesn't happen in other places: OS X' Core Audio does sample rate conversion (SRC) on the fly. Which also means worse quality than what you could achieve by doing SRC in a program like Barbabatch.
davidpye
Either convert the file in Logic, using the Audio Bin>File>Copy/Convert Files. Or convert it before you drop it into logic. Or in the Project Settings>Assets, make sure that Copy External Audio Files is checked along with Convert Audio Files.
Holger Lagerfeldt
I you're going to use 96 kHz it's completely counter-production to use anything else than high quality SRC, so don't use Core Audio for that. Instead get a program like Barbabatch or simiilar. You can improve your sound a lot better by improving your skills, your monitoring, your acoustics, etc. Sample rate is about 0,0001% of the sound quality if you have a decent converter. Jope
Sample rate is about 0,0001% of the sound quality if you have a decent converter. Gee... How did you calculate that number? Ok, I shut up.
Holger Lagerfeldt
Yeah, I admit that number isn't entirely scientific.
gengis
Thanks for the replies. I checked out Barbabatch and then found this http://www.bias-inc.com/products/peakPro5/resampling/peakResamplingWhitePaper.pdf for any one interested. Im currently using Peak 5 now but im still not sure what src its using when playing. Ill give them a call and hopefully get an answer. Its good to know the info on Logic's SRC and Core Audio. Thanks again!
Holger Lagerfeldt
Peak has great SRC.
gengis
Well I found out that my issue had something to do with my computer and my convertor. I ran diskwarrior this morning and then realized that when I played a file in Peak my convertor automatically switched to the correct sample rate. Something got "fixed" after running it. Well at least I found my answer, according to the techs at Bias, it should behave just as Logic does, as a sped up output. Thanks for all the replies!
