Loading up Logic this weekend - Questions...

Here's my game plan. First, I'm a Digi PT LE 7.1 user via an 002 on an iMac 2.16 gHz w/ 3 gig of RAM and a dedicated Glyph (Firewire) 250 gig audio file drive. My checklist -

* Back-up current & completed PT projects (keepers) to DVD

* Wipe & partition the Glyph - separate audio partitions for PT and Logic respectively

* Install Logic, accompanying programs (Main Stage, etc.) and sound libraries

* Download and install recent updates

Questions -

* Good game plan?

* Any insight or advice on what to be aware of regarding Logic w/ 002?

* Any other sage advice and words of wisdom?

Really looking forward to getting to know Logic. I don't foresee ditchin' PT. Too familiar with it and from what I've heard and read, there's really a lot to be gained by having both programs. Plus, I got my 002 modded by Black Lion Audio, so I'm actually pretty happy with the preamps and upgraded converters. Not Apogee quality, but then I'm the very definition of a prosumer/bedroom producer.

Look forward to any and all input and direction.

uhm..I don't see why you want to/need to partition the Glyph. It's just a record drive, right??? You could just have a ProTools Sessions folder and a Logic Sessions master folder, and keep your sessions in there.

(imvho..the jury is still out if you REALLY need to have partiions of 80 gigs or less on a record drive...)

I'm not a huge fan of using an 002 (or any Digi Core Audio Drivers) for anything OTHER than ProTools, including Logic.

How big is the HD on the iMac? Running Tiger or Leopard? doing a clean install of Logic 8??

how's your $$ situation? Got enough for an Apogee Duet for Logic??? Don't know if the Black Lion Mod will make a difference. You're still dealing with Digi's Core Audio drivers....

I have both my Apogee and an mBox 2 Pro on my rig. I use the Apogee for Logic, and the mBox for PTools LE>

Thanks Dave. I'll lose the partition idea and go the folder route per your advice. I was going with the assumption that dedicated partitions would help avoid any sketchiness with recovering/pointing to audio files within a project w/ two DAWs on the same mac. Yet another example proving the old "don't assume" axiom.

I hear you re: the 002. However, I did post a question before my Logic purchase here on the forum and got all favorable replies on the 002's ability to play nicely with Logic. Ideally, I'd have an Ensemble for Logic. Realistically and economically, I've thought about a Presonus FireStudio. But maritally (read domestic tranquility preservation), it'll be neither.

The other consideration is I believe I'm out of firewire ports on the iMac -- 002, Glyph. And I don't like the idea of yanking FW inputs in and out when switching DAWs. Although generally I've been very favorable of yanking since I was 13. But that's another post altogether.

Regarding my OS, I'm at 10.4.3 (I think). It's the one most stable with my Pro Tools LE version 7.1 cs3. Which I really like and find to be very stable. Digi had released 7.3 shortly after this update and it was major PITA for most everyone making the jump. However, I hear updates and 7.4 have greatly remedied that. However, 7.1 gives me what I need.

As for the install, it will be virgin from the recently unwrapped Logic package I rec'd January. And yes, I plan on putting it on my iMac hard drive (C: Drive/sorry for that) which is also 250 gig. I'm probably looking at losing my iTunes library and storing on a separate drive. I know that Logic is a big real estate eater. But last time I checked my available gig, I had plenty.

Thanks again for the input and I'm sure I'll have a lot of noob questions to come after/during this weekend's installation.

I found that PTools LE 7.3cs6 to be VERY stable with OS 10.4.9.

I'm running 7.4.cs2 on 10.4.11, and I'm having an issue or two (tho..I really think it's a WAVES issue more than a PTools issue.

'domestic tranquility preservation'.

DUDE...that's the quote of the year. LOVE it.

Thanks again, Dave. And Chris, big thanks on the .PDF and primer regarding dedicated audio drives and partitioning. This synthesizes the many disparate articles and postings I've glazed through in the past on the subject. This is good stuff.

I held off on the install due to the fact that I can get my grubby little mits on a new Alesis iO/26 for right at $300. A figure that doesn't upset the apple cart here on the home front. However, I almost completely dismissed it out of hand as I tend to look down on Alesis gear. I'm no snob, and they're no Behringer, but I didn't see it being a better option over my 002, DAE drivers notwithstanding.

But on closer inspection the unit has a ton of positive reviews and user experience (at least on the Mac side of things). So, of course I've got a few more questions --

* Anyone using the iO/26 with Logic (for the life of me I can't find a search function on this site)?

* If so, what's the verdict?

* How do I get around my FW input limitations on the iMac? Is it possible to run the Glyph directly out of 002 for audio file folders? Then is it a matter of getting another external drive for the iO/26 and Logic? Or are these assumptions missing the boat completely based on my remedial Mac knowledge?

* Are there any considerations when you have a Digi interface and a secondary interface on the same rig? As in things to "turn off" before opening a DAW?

Sorry if these strike anyone as Duh! But, as always, any input and feedback is greatly appreciated and welcome.

Hi..The question could be in some ways answered with more options made avaiable to you..Here goes...This is my take on it..Logic Studio contains much more than Logic Pro8..LP8 is only about a 7-8 gb download...All else are additional items included in the box...But are not needed at all to run Logic Pro8..

You can just install LP8 and 3 other items..I forget one of them but you will see them at the bottom one after the other..The EX extreme analogue,,Just below it is the one I can't remember. OH yeah extreme digital ....Also the Legacy content..

You can all ways elect to install the additional content after you get a feel for wether it is something that you might enjoy or rather check out..Also you will want to immediately get all the updates before settling in with Logic..

If you do the whole enchilada thing however...

The Garageband content gets installed to your internal HD as do any of the instruments in the jam packs..But if you expand the folders you can install the loops for the jampacks as well as the additional Audio content for Soundtrack Pro to an external drive..Just click the apple icon after them an select "other" then put them were you want...If you do a full install in this way you should have the loops and audio files ready to check out in the loop browser..If you do it at a later point in time you will have to define the path to them..Not a big deal...I hope I'm not sounding like an idiot here...But just figured maybe some of this would be of help...Enjoy the journey...JON

Just thought I'd mention it..Just due to the fact you are new to Logic and might be helpful in regards to un needed disc space being used...JON

Thanks Jon, and I'll keep an eye on the real estate when I load it up. However, my key questions regarding the Alesis unit and chaining firewire outputs to external drives via the interfaces (Digi 002/Alesis iO/26) are what I'm still looking for some responses on.

Good news, I found the search function right up there under Forums tab. The Alesis iO/26 had a happy camper and then someone who wasn't so happy. On the 002 side, it seems to echo my prior research -- as long as you're using DAE core drivers, you should be pretty skippy using it as a front-end for Logic.

I guess my question really isn't one. I'm sort of just looking for an all clear on getting separate interfaces. The deal from RMC on the Alesis iO/26 for 300 clams and the idea of having it dedicated for Logic sounds like the way to go. Any practical experience that anyone can share along with what else I need to factor in would be welcome.

Sheepish bump, but...

I know the response is probably, "No, you friggin' tard! You can't chain a hard drive to an interface like an 002 or iO/26 and expect to solve your firewire port limitation problem." So, if anyone can confirm for me. I have done limited research, but I haven't gone so far as to enter a Mac board and post there.
