What Interface Should I Get?

Recommended Posts

I have a MacBook Pro; 2.2ghz 120gb drive. 2 gb ram. I have good mic (akg4047) and preamp (art gold dual). I was trying to use the FastTrack by M-Audio ... forget that! Way too much latency and problems with hearing the mic monitoring not sync'd with the recorded signal (latency?).

So, I'm ready to start recording but need the best interface to use with Logic Pro 8. My spending limit is 1k, but would love to find something in the $500 range ... mostly just want it to work well :)!

My recording will be mostly voice / guitar / keys / midi.

All thoughts are welcome!

Steve

Only problem, with the Duet is there is no MIDI. I own a DUET for my iMAC, and LOVE IT. For My Studio MAC, I am using a MOTU828MK3 with an 8pre. You may want to look at the Ultralite from MOTU as one of your considerations

OK, thanks for all the input. Here's what I've determined. It looks like the Apogee Duet is the best deal for me. It's true that I mentioned midi; however, truthfully I probably won't be doing any since all the layered samples are available with Logic ... probably much better sounds than are on my old midi equipment.

I don't need more than 2 inputs and the preamps are rated really high. So, for my simple needs I think it's the Duet for me!

Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

PS. I think I'll even go and make a donation to this site :)

wow every time i come here i see the same questions, INTERFACE!

Maybe someone or some of us can make a review of all the logic compatible or status with interfaces and CPUs..

i second that! it would be nice to see who else has troubles with some equipment on certain setups too.

i recently bought the duet, and its a phenomenal unit sonically. also very stable so much so that im now looking at putting my ff800 up on ebay to get the ensemble.

originally i was concerned about there being no midi, but everything is usb these days so thats kind of irrelevant, especially if youre on a laptop portability is an issue.

I do want to make one very important point about the Duet: it's outputs are UNBALANCED 1/4. Therefore, a long cable run (or even a short one) will almost certainly result in RF noise. Also, if your monitors only have balanced inputs, you'll likely want to run through a transformer. That being said, the damn thing sounds pristine for $500, and integrates like a dream.

What ever you do DO NOT buy one of the M-Audio Firewire devices. I chanced it thinking I may be lucky but, nope, not even recognised on my machine. Zip Nada

Tech support will not support their Leopard drivers and without a shadow of a doubt the most obnoxious and rude, supposidly support line, that I've had the displeasure of speaking to.

Avoid like the clap

m-audio inputs/outputs are unbalanced. they use a unbalanced signal and somehow convert it to a balanced signal somehow. i had a friend run an oscilloscope and call tech support when he found them to be unbalanced and that was the response he got from them.

one thing you cant really fault them for though is driver support. they were slow with leopard updates but have some of the most stable drivers out there. Not a fan of their interfaces sound quality/converters though.
