kristoff
Guys I hope you can help. Today my external hard drive decided it would be a good idea to stop working. I have lost all my music I have purchased over the last 4 years so im a little updet. Not just that but it had the jam packs installed as well. I have ordered a new drive and want to know if I can install the jam packs without having to re instal logic? ANy ideas on how to recover my HD would be good as well. Gpotvin
Please elaborate on "stopped working". Does it power up? If it powers up, is it mounting? Does it show up in Apple Disk Utility? If you disconnect, then reconnect, does it remount? Does the external drive have multiple connector ports? If so, have you tried a different connector? This is what I do for "a living", so I'm happy to help.
DocBop
Well the obvious answer is just restore your backups to the new drive, but have a feeling you not backed up. Depends on what died on your hard drive and how much money you want to spend to get it back. Do the basics plug and replug things a couple times to reseat the connectors. try different cables. Try a different computer. Try running the Apple disk utilities, or some 3rd party tool to clean up the permissions and such. Don't repartition if you do you will be hosed but good. If all that stuff fails it probably is a physical disk problem. If a physical disk issue the fix gets into how much do you want to spend. Do you hear the drive spin up to speed when you power it on, if not you're in deep sneakers. If interface electronics died they might be able to be replaced. If spindle motor died sometimes the platters can be removed and put into an identical drive. But people charge up the wazoo to do things like that and none will guarantee results. Good luck. kristoff
Thanks for your help guys, but i tried all of the above and it seems that the external drive has failed. It is showing in DU but when I plug it in then try to restart my mac I think this is what causes it to hang up. When I dont have it plugged in the mac works fine. I have done a fresh install, and bought a 500GB segate external drive. Unfortutanley I lost all my music but have managed to rip it all back from my CDs so im back to where I was (minus the crap music) i dont use. Cheers anyway

el-bo
agreed...´tis good that all´s not lost the standard advice is usually to buy an external drive to record audio....but this needs to be changed.....everyone needs 2 external drives at least....we must back up the external drive.... i learnt this very early watching a dkgross-meister presentation concerning backup/workflow (legend has it that he owns upwards of 50 harddrives, and can spend anything up to 20 hours a day, backing up....sorry dave ) in terms of hard-drive failure, ´tis not a question of IF, ´tis a question of WHEN good luck
ChicoSatis
DK has only 50 hard drives? I thought it was 100. I watched that video too and the next day ordered 2 additional hard drives for back ups. One question I'm curiuos about though. Do you keep your back up external hard drives plugged in or do you keep them off? That is after you back up your work do you eject the drive and let it rest or keep it going. Which would be better? Thanks. Have a good one. Nublu
Hi, Sorry to hear about the drive failure. I also think that DKGross's advice in those vids is golden. They're on the Seattle Logic User Group website. http://seattle.logic-users.org/wordpress/ Common sense, peace of mind, enjoy the ride. Works for me.. Thanks Dave.
