logic merge function

i'm trying to figure out exactly what the merge function does in logic. I assumed that it if you selected a number of regions and "merged' them they would be the be the exact same content, but in a whole region rather than separate. This doesn't seem to be the case though. I was cutting up a region and I wanted to merge the smaller regions together so i could copy and paste them to other parts of the track, whoever when I merged them it simply filled in the cuts with the data that I had cut out!

how can a merge together these regions without this happening?

yes, basically, select data with the marquee tool and delete in the arrange window.

I am new to logic audio editing so I may be doing something wrong that I don't know.

this example is a stutter edit of sorts, just cutting out every other 1/8th note, then I want to turn the resulting bars of 1/8th note sized regions into 1 region with the audio same as it was when it was cut.

Hmmm? That's exactly what I do and I work with audio all the time. Cut out all the parts you don't want, delete them from the arrange window, select all the regions you want to merge (either shift click to select or rubber band them) and then hit the default key command (in Logic 7) Command+m. If that's what you're doing I'm stumped.

i see - as long as you delete portions of a region out and don't move any of the remaining regions, the glue tool will just fill out what is missing of the excisting region.

or to be more precise: if you move one of the pieces just a few ticks to the left or right, it will just fill in the gaps. however, if you move one, say around 1 format to the left, it will ask for creation of a new merged region/file.

do anyone know what the limit is??

it seems like Logic is thinking a bit for you here....
