That guy is on a PC.

Maybe he should switch to Mac instead of blaming the iLok? Okay I'm probably gonna take some flack for that comment.

I run Waves Platinum Bundle, Auto-Tune, Flux Epure, etc. from an iLok, and not once have I experienced any error message, dropout or problems with either software or the iLok website.

I did however see someone have problems with the PACE drivers using the iLok reset software (for illegal cracks). Serves him right ;-)

I'm right there with ya lager. I've got about 35 items on my iLok, including some apps. You won't see me letting it get anywhere near a windoze machine!

I'll second that. My iLok is crammed full of stuff, and I love having it. I do wish you could authorize TWO of them with the same plugins tho, so I don't have to disconnect it from the tower everytime I want to play on the laptop.

as copyright protection schemes go, I personally love it.

(fwiw..we have them on the PTools PC's at the main studio, and they seem to work just fine....)

I have Digi, URS, Sony, and several others on 2 iloks, alot of doubles of stuff. One is my "home use only" and the other is for work (when I actually get any these days...). One has PT HD specific stuff, the other PT LE... the HD one also has the LE stuff though, so alot of duplicates. And I have run both on the same machine before.

Unless you meant having a "back up ilok" with dups of everything?

Now, which Waves plug do I need first?

There are a lot of other plugins available that do the job of WAVES stuff, for a lot less money, so I'd look around. I love the DUY stuff, especially.

...That being said, I have the WAVES Gold Bundle, and I use it all the time. The Renaissance Compressor especially .. And I love the Q10 EQ..it's GREAT for tightly notching out specific frequencies (great for audio post work).

but.....I just got a UAD card...so THAT thought might change my feelings of some of my 'go to' plugins...

Thanks for the feedback guys.

That's a pretty unanimous thumbs up for iLok on Mac then. Cool.

Instead ask what plug-ins do you want? What do you need?

Bread & butter?

Remember there's lot's of stuff out there, not necessarily Waves.

Sonnox Oxford, Sonalksis, Flux, etc.

I do use Waves, primarily the Renaissance Compressor. Don't like the Q10 at all tough.

Thanks again for the advice, i'll make sure I do some research before shelling out a large wedge of cash.

Could anyone advise about which of Logics plug-ins are good/bad compared to third party alternatives?

There aren't any "bad" Logic plugs, well maybe the De-esser. In that case the Eiosis De-Esser is the cat's meow, but there are Logic plugs that aren't "as good" at certain things as others may be. So, referring back to lagerfeldt's undeniably germaine question, "what do you need?"

The selection is now so great and so varied, that without being specific it's like asking us what you should have for dinner tonight!

Okay, i'll try to be a bit more specific.

I make mostly electronic music, not just dance, some trip hop, ambient, etc, so i'll be trying to get deep, rich sounding basses and good "space" in the tracks.

I am happy with what Logic has to offer, but as I have little experience with other software, I'm curious about what else is out there.

I sometimes struggle to get a nice sounding reverb from Logics plugs (maybe I just don't know how to manipulate them properly) and also distortion causes some issues. I notice that Logics distortion plugs are all quite different, which leaves me a little confused as to which ones are more suited (I know there are no rules, but I feel I'm lacking some basic guidelines here) for certain sounds.

Currently though, I think I'm most in need of something to use for the final mixing stage. I've read comments about the Linear Phase Eq being quite good and the Multipressor being of some use (although I find it a bit tricky and potentially very destructive). I recently bought PSP's Vintage Warmer 2, which, I feel, gives a very different result to that achieved with Logics plugs, but I also notice that it does color the sound quite a bit which may not be ideal for more subtle effects.

I'm on quite a low budget, so I'm not looking to spend above $300 for one plug-in, but if anyone can recommend some of their favorite compressors, eq's, reverbs or distortion plugs, at least i'll have a starting point when trying to navigate my way through the seemingly infinite amount of choice, provided by todays saturated market.

Now, what do I fancy for dinner tonight?

yo man, about the distortion-

I think logics distortions are OK sometimes, but another great plugin is that steve massey tape saturation plugin that's FREE and sounds great.

especially if you want something a little warmer in the distortion area.
