greeneye
I've got a friend who has an Equinox 32 channel summing box or console with Protools HD and he's going absolutely nuts over it. He has all the toys and uses the digi 192 interfaces. He's mixing in the box and summing his mixes thru the equinox. I admit the mix I heard was warm, large and fat. Are any of you using summing consoles with logic? Greeneye
marcel72
Yes. I mix thru Apogee Rosettas into a 24ch late '80s Soundcraft Delta DLX. It has been rebuilt (re-capped, EQ stages restructured, amps changed) by Jim Williams at Audio Upgrades. I usually do like your friend does, writing volume automation in the DAW and leaving the desk faders at unity. I do use the desk EQs, because I like the way they sound, and the panpots. I insert analogue dynamics units on channels and busses, often including the stereo mix. Kind of an ITB/OTB hybrid. I know many people who turn out great ITB mixes, but I have never been happy with mine. Stuff gains a certain amount of size and depth from analogue summing that I just can't seem to recreate with plugs. It's a bigger investment, though. More channels of D/A, outboard dynamics, etc... I think this is the best of both worlds, although YMMV as always...
