Did I destroy my original?

I have a sample library on my external harddrive that I frequently use for my tracks. If I drag and drop a sample from that library into Logic, is it accessing that sample or does it automatically make a copy in the project folder so that I am not destroying the original?

Or is this up to me to copy the file into the project audio folder first and then drag it into logic from there??

Thanks!

I grab a sample, toss it in and start mangling it. Does It automatically work on a copy or am I messing with the original until I save?

You're messing with the original.

Conclusion? ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS:

1) File > New, choose a template, then

2) SAVE and make sure "Include Assets" is selected.

It will ALWAYS make a copy.

YIKES!!!!!! Great, who knows how many of my samples I have messed up and don't even know it!!! I may have to reimport 50gb to replace potentially mangled ones... uuuuuuuuuuggghhh!!!!

So, when I first start making a project, and before it closes the first time and it automatically asks me to save it- I should check the include assets box, and from then on, if I pop a sample into it, it will autocopy it (I dont have to save AGAIN for this to happen, just make sure the box is ticked the first time I save), right?

Just press Command-S at the moment you create your project. It will ask you for a name and location on your drive. Then you just press Command-S to save again.

The "Include Assets" checkbox should be checked (it is by default) and if the advanced parameters are open you can see that "Copy audio files..." is also selected.
