Ways to A/B mixes in Logic Pro 8

backslash

Recommended Posts

I was just curious how everyone here A/B's Mixes. I know of the "copy audio configuration,"paste audio configuration," in the mixer in Logic Pro 8. But that is really only good for starting with mix A, copying it, changing the mix (mix B) and then reverting back to mix A by " paste audio configuration." That doesn't really help if I want to keep going back and forth for comparison. All the inserts (fx) have a "compare" button, why doesn't the mixer? Any thoughts?

You could always bounce mix A and then put it on it's own track in the project. Leave it muted, and when you want to compare you could un-mute and solo it.

That may not be the best method either, but it's what comes to mind.

doesn't protools?

No. But it does have automation playlists for each track. The Logic equivelant to this is explained very well by David here:

Mix snapshots would be hard to pull off if the plug-ins changed. But they could certainly be possible as long as the plug-ins and routing didn't change. Basically just a master automation playlist function. That would be nice.

You know how MainStage can export layouts, patches, and/or sets as individual files? Then you can import them in other MainStage concerts. Would be neat if Logic could import/export Mixer snapshot, and/or project automation as individual files!

Sorry David, but you know this request really belongs in another forum.

Just kidding. :)

Welcome back.

When i am mixing i use save as with include assets unchecked. I do this everytime i make a major change to be sure that i can always get back to the previous mix if needed. Since Logic will allow you to have multiple projects open at a time i open the 2 projects i want to compare and using the windows menu you can switch between the projects pretty quickly.

When I want to compare 2 mixes, I always bounce them to an AIFF or WAV and import them into a different project. Having them on their own tracks in a separate project allows you to OPTION+CLICK the solo button on each track in the mixer (doesn't work in the arrange window) to very quickly and seamlessly switch between them. Plus, you could also load up a multimeter (or something like the Roger Nichols Inspector) plug-in on each mix track for further comparison.

I've been doing this all day, and I'm about to lose my mind. :-)

I was thinking that something like this wouldn't be to hard to do, but you spelled it out for me. Thanks! :D

still would be nice if they added mixer snapshots

Thanks for the input, but there haas to be a more streamlined way to toggle between mixes. Is this an obscure request? I wouldn't think so...doesn't digital performer have a way to save multiple mixes, doesn't protools?

Not sure if this has been mentioned else where but a reminder can always be useful. The way I A/B mixes in Logic 8 is to have my 2 audio tracks on the arranged window with one audio track selected/highlighted

Then I press "S" on my keyboard to solo the track

Then I press the "space bar" to obviously play the music

I then press "S" again and then quickly press "M" on the keyboard

This un-solo's then mutes the highlighted track which then engages the other mix on the arrange window

Then I hit "M" again and then quickly hit "S" (you get the picture Lather, Rinse,Repeat)

Unfortunately there is latency or lag between the engaging and un-engaging of the tracks but I find this to be the far simplest and streamlined way to a/b mixes

Hope that helpsjavascript:emoticon(':D')

I just make my song 9999 bars long, add loads of tracks and then put different variations on different tracks in the song. I put the variations in their own folders. It is important to name the folders! One small PITA is that you can't resize columns in the Event list, so long names are harder to read though. I also tend to move automation (TBA) to regions before packing the folders.

Composing for TV series, or producing library music & commercials, this is a handy way to collect many variations of one theme. It's not terribly elegant, but it works.

If I want to try out different mastering plugin combinations, saving them as Channel Strips with a little info ("new track UAD", etc) works fine.

PS David's tip on having several alternate tracks assigned to the same Audio Object:

......might be another useful idea?

DP seems to have the Mix snap shot wrapped up. I have no need to run out and pay over $300 for Digital Performer when I can (work around) have Logic do the same thing with a few simple tricks and some pre-planning.

In the attached example, I have created 4 audio channels and placed a dry loop on each. A Guitar on trk 1, a dry Bass on track 2 and a 2 different Drum loops on audio tracks 3 and 4.

My effect processing will take place on the AUX tracks. This means I send the dry parts to AUX tracks. In this example I will use three Aux tracks for the guitar and 3 Aux tracks for the Bass. I will not do anything with the drums for now.

Looking at the OUTPUT of the Audio channels you notice there is no output selected and I used 3 busses per audio track. Each AUX track uses the respective bus input. Aux 1 has bus 1 as the input, Aux 2 uses BUS 2 etc.

To A/B compare my mixes in this case, I am going to select and Solo safe one drum part at a time. For now I want to compare the different Guitar and Bass FX channels.

Right now I want to compare the guitar parts so I will solo safe a bass part along with the solo safe drum part.

In the Mixer screen, I compare the guitar parts by holding down the Option key while clicking on the specific guitar channel SOLO button.

As long as a channel has the yellow Solo button active the other channels can be in Solo safe mode until the right combination for a mix has been found.

I can now bounce out the solo'd tracks as a mix (add to audio bin), make changes to the main mix and bounce again. I can even compare the mixes directly in the Audio bin.

Many options, but this is one way to do it.
