Mackie Onyx 1220 as the interface

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I just recently discovered this forum and I'm very glad I did! I'm spending way too much time here, but maybe it's worth it (I'm learning a lot of good tips!)...

I switched from protools to Logic last december and I'm experiancing my first serious DAW work enviroment! I used to have Protools running on a laptop and never really got the hang of it. So far I'm glad I switched because I'm finally getting some work done!

I'm using a Mackie Onyx 1220 mixer with the firewire card as my interface. I'de like to know what kind of experiences have you guys had with these mixers?!

Is it worth considering getting a dedicated interface which would have more outputs, S/PDIF etc? I would end up plugging the main outs of the interface to the onyx which goes then into the monitors, because I have a bunch of other stuff going on into the onyx and to the monitors.

Cheers, Tom

Just thought I'd let you know I am using the same mixer and I'm really happy with it (especially the Mic Pre amps). My previous mixer was as Alesis Studio 32 and the Pre's were noticeably inferior to the Mackie. Anyway I am using a MOTU 2408 MkII as my interface. It has 8 in/outs but the way I record (mainly midi and 1 Mic for vocals) I never use all the Inputs but they're there if I need them. It works flawlessly and recommend that set up if you want an alternative. I just bring the Output of the MOTU back into 2 channels of the Mackie and away I go. Hope this helps.

Yeah, thanks :D

I really dig the onyx mixer! I used to have the digidesign outs go to the last stereo in of the onyx. Now after I swiched, I had an interface that I couldn't utilize with Protools.

I just wish the onyx could route the outs of the DAW directly to the channels! The inputs are plenty for my needs (although a digital in like an SPDIF would come in handy) but I'm missing the output routing that a dedicated interface would provide! The onyx only has the FW 2 trak

I'm trying to make a decision on what I'm looking for in the interface and how I could utilize in with the onyx. This of course has everything to do with the price I would be willing to pay for it! Since I'm up and running with the onyx for now, I can wait and save for the upgrade. Just can't decide.. something simple like the TC or motu or fancy like the Apogee stuff...

what kind of ways would there be to utilize 2 interfaces, say the Duet and the onyx? daisy chaining?

  • 1 month later...

since you are using this configuration I wonder if you can help me, I'm juts setting up my rig for the first time so apologies if this is a newbie query.,

I have a Mackie onyx 1220 with firewire option and logic 8, no problems with audio but I cant get the mackie to operate the logic mixer, I've tried the 'learn' operation, but when I use a button or a slider on the mackie in learning mode nothing happens, it only seems to recognise the K25 midi keyboard and Apple keyboard, the onyx isnt available to 'learn' from.

do I need an additional connection from the onyx other than the firewire link?? (midi out)
