EZ drummer? Using or confusing?

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm just taking a break from drum editing.

I purchased EZ-drummer recently and I really dig the concept. Can't wait to get the EZplayerPRO :D

Somehow still feels like too much time with drum programming, maybe I just need more experience..

How do you guys program with this? Do you first just drag and drop basic grooves and compose the song and afterwards add all the fills and arrangements?

Or do you arrange and edit the track immediately?

It would be nice if you shared your workflow with EZD!

Thanks, Tom

I audition several grooves in EZ's Midi browser and drag a bunch of them onto the arrange page. I'll try and find a couple of placeholders for the verses and choruses that will do for now and which I might even keep but I've got the others on the arrange to try out as alternatives. Somehow, I prefer this to constantly sorting thru EZ's midi browser. It gets some of the decision making process out of the way.

I might also duplicate a track and put several of the alternatives stacked up in the chorus section and just mute/unmute them to see how they're working with the chorus. This is before I do anything like splitting EZ's midi part into separate MIDI tracks, which I don't usually do. (I will however create separate auxes for at least the snare sound.) The only time I have a separate MIDI track is for something like a hat or snare part when I'm playing something in.

Which is where building fills comes in. I'll create a track just for my snare fills, for instance. More often than not, I can't find a fill in EZ that works with the song so I play them in.

One thing I'm finding that's impeding my workflow is the slowness of my computer. It can barely handle EZ at this point but I'm about to upgrade and it should be a different story then! I suspect that I'll be able to experiment a little more easily at that point. Right now, sometimes even just editing one of EZ's midi parts will cause it to make the song stutter.

Ditto the above.

I have a set of V-Drums (Lite) that I'll use to hack away at some parts that I can hear in my head but can't easily create with the mouse.

Creating MIDI drum parts is a tedious business. I tend to dread it but once I'm in-the-groove they usually come together fairly quickly.

I get more frustrated browsing loops or synth presets looking for "the sound in my head". I can hack away at the drum pads but I really suck at synth-programming/sound design.

I really like EZ Drummer, btw.

Trigger Finger for me (mostly).

As for EZPlayer Pro - we just wrapped up the testing for it.

It should be hitting the shelves very, very soon.

It will prove to be a helpful tool for writing, etc.

There are a lot of folks holding their breath for the release.

Soon .... very soon

I'm holding out for Superior Drummer® 2.0 (which comes w/EZplayer® Pro.. I think.. or at least EZplayer Free) but wondering if in the meantime I should go for EZdrummer® and then do the crossgrade in June when Superior comes out.. Addictive Drums are decent and will get me through but I am not satisfied with them.. especially the snare sounds.

As far as programming goes: I've gotten fairly good at creating my beats from scratch.. and most times I'll revisit the drum parts and tweak them further after the majority of the song is done.. loops usually don't get it for me unless I'm just jamming along and come up with something I like.. in which case I'll usually delete /add parts as needed to the loop.

Waterboy..

I'm thinking maybe you're part of a Toontrack test group or something and wondering if you're familiar with Superior Drummer® 2.0? and if so what's your take on it? I'm wondering if it's specialized mostly for e-drums and wouldn't be that advantageous for someone like myself who works via the piano roll matrix and/or midi-controller keyboard.. and maybe I could get best bang for the buck with EZdrummer®.. any thoughts about this? thanks in advance for your reply.

I am part of their testing team.

S2 is one very impressive unit. The most impressive I have seen/heard to date - and I have used all of the big names for Drumming that are out there.

It's going to be perfect for every type of user - eDrums, Piano Roll (like us), Triggered Pads (MPD32, Trigger Finger, etc), so forth and so on.

I have been a user of BFD for a long time as well. I can say that I am impressed with BFD2; however - I know what S2 has in store.

IMHO - people are going to have a very difficult time not wanting to get Superior 2.

It is going to be that good.
