fadercraig
Hey, my first guess would be a bad mic cable. They can easily still carry sound but as they get passed their useful life they can pick up more noise. Can you give more info about your set up? What mic, interface etc? How long has it been noisy...always, it just started but was fine before etc... The only other thing would be that you live next to the subway Sorry couldnt help it...it really sounds like that... Anyway, try swapping the mic cable first. Cool Cx
dcoz3md
im using a rode ntk on a behringer xenyx1204fx. ive already tried a different preapm and thats not the problem. i bought the mic off of e-bay and its been doing this since i got it. the mic cord that goes from the power supply to the preamp is new but the one that goes from the mic to the power supply isnt. do you think it is the cord? ive been getting a lot of different answer from "you need a new preamp" to "your mic is broken" i already know it not the pre. a new mic cord wouldnt be bad so i hope its just that and now the mic
davidrice
Hey there, It's DEFINITELY the mic. Call Rode, tell them what's happening, and hopefully they'll still offer to fix it. A friend and I both had this happen with our NTKs a few years back. It's a known issue. Good Luck! David
dcoz3md
did thay charge you to fix it? and does it still work fine?
davidrice
No, they didn't charge to fix. They were really cool about it, I think they paid postage and everything. I sold it a year or so later so I can't speak to whether it still works properly, but I suspect it does.

Pardon me, sir. I did say it's likely the mic tube in response to your last posts ! ! ! ! - NEVER buy anything as sensitive as a valve LD mic off eBay. It's a haven for crooks shifting gear that's past it's sell-by. - C
dcoz3md
your right, you did. its just that the majority of replies have said cord or preamp. im just trying to see what everybody thinks before i go spend money on something i dont need. i do appreciate your response. pantomimeHorse
Rode, or one of their distributors, will fix it for you. No worries. Rode pride themselves on after-sales support. Nothing but praise for them in respect of my NT's. - C Edit 22/04/08: I had occasion to speak to my Rode dealer in UK today regarding the bass-cut on one of my own mics and I mentioned your problem. His answer reinforces my own to you in earlier post. The NTK uses an ECC88 valve (tube) rigged to work as a differential amp (Blumlein config). If one cathode arm component is damaged due to dry joint/stress/physical handling/dirt etc., this can introduce the most fearful degredation of S/N ratio in the mic. - C
