cheeseman
hi there! im new to logic and am having some problems with 5.1 surround. When i create a new track there is no surround selection, only mono and stereo. however, if i select surround as a channel's output it behaves correctly, i can still use the surround panner to move the audio around in the space. i cant bounce out as 5.1 either. well, thanks for listening! David Nahmani
You mean in the "New Tracks" dialog? The only track that will have the surround options in the "Input" and "Output" fields are audio tracks. Software Instruments only have an "Output" field and allow you to choose surround. Doesn't that work?
cheeseman
nope. the only two options i have in the "format" menu when creating a new track are mono and stereo.
David Nahmani
You probably don't have enough inputs/outputs on your hardware? If you're using the mac's built-in input or a 2 channel audio interface you won't see those choices available.
cheeseman
i'm using an m-audio firewire 410 which has 8 outputs. i can actually move the audio around using the surround panner and it will play back in 5.1 when the channel strip is in mono. could it be a driver problem? would reinstalling logic work? shivermetimbers
What is/are your surround preferences set up like? (Logic > Preferences > Surround)
cheeseman
its just the standard 5.1 (ITU 775) setting i managed to get a different sound card to test it (fireface 400) and it still doesnt work so it must be a logic problem?
cheeseman
well, i totally reinstalled logic and its still the same. i have absolutely no idea what to do. why does this sort of stuff always happen when a deadline is looming

I figure that at some point in my life a Clown must have died, and is mistaking me for the person he is really trying to get back at. Have you looked at the M-audio software mixer set up? David Nahmani
Can you assign an output to Out 3-4, Out 5-6 or Out 7-8?
cheeseman
yes i can. i've been through both soundcards settings with no joy. its like logic doesnt recognise that i have a surround capable card connected. but if that were true surely there would be no surround ability at all? is it possible to bounce out the tracks as mono files, with their surround panning automation, and then use another program to join them into the 6 surround channel? Hi, UTM must be active for full surround functionality in Logic Pro 8. Best, M.K.BEAT
