Live multitrack recording

I work as a live sound engineer and thought i'd get a motu 828 mk2 for my macbook pro and start recording some of the bands that i work for..

So.. i hook it all up and try it out last night.

it was a three piece band so i could just about get away with using the 8 channels available. (used the direct outs on our midas - amazing!!!) but my macbook pro gave me a "disk too slow message" even though i had tested the set up at home and had recorded 10 tracks no sweat at all.

my question is this... is it possible that the reason for this is because i'm right in front of the PA stack on one side of the dancefloor (it's LOUD) and the vibrations are f$@%ing things up? i say this because i moved it to the side a bit and the drop outs stopped. It could be that there was something else wrong though and that was just coincidence. could it be a problem with just being a slow hard disk? do i need to buy an external fw800 disk instead?

i am recording at 44.1/16 on a macbook pro core2duo 2.2 15" with 2gb ram running 10.5.2 and logic 8.01

thanks.

hey there... thanks craig, i did figure that. will it not affect the transfer rate if i was sending 16 tracks back and forth to the 828?

i recorded again last night

and moved the MBP and interface into a quieter corner and it performed flawlessly with the internal HD.

must have been the vibrations....

  • 10 months later...

I've been recording with this set up (I added an ADA8000 for more channels) for the last few months and it's been running fine. I have been making sure I've been keeping the laptop away from very loud sources/vibrations but...

I recorded a gig on Sunday night and the only place i could set up was right next to the stage. I was around 2 meters directly behind ne side of the PA stack and had the laptop on 2 layers of neoprene then on top of the Yamaha LS9 i was using for preamps and routing.. so plenty of weight and damping underneath, but the stage volume was peaking at 117dB ( yup, I was protected!) and true to form the computer had one small glitch about half way through the set meaning i had to cut a song out of the playlist.

So the answer to my own question is yes.. vibrations do seem to make a difference.

I was also having this issue and tried everything to reslove (new Firewire Harddrive, upped the ram to 4 gig etc). Even with 1 track I was getting Disk to slow error. It seemed to happen about 2-10 mins into each recording. I finally realized I had my Edirol FA101 setup for 96 kHz. Changed it to 44.1kHz and now I can record all 10 tracks untill the Hard-drive space runs out with no issues or real difference in sound quality.
