harry_seldon
I have Logic 8 on an original Macbook. After installation of the latest software updates, I am experiencing much higher cpu usage than befor running software update, and I have no idea which update (s) caused the problem, not how to solve it. I have 2GB of memory, and running Mac 10.4.11 Any suggestions?
Anowrexiya
Try turning off the airport card.
harry_seldon
That actually was a significant help, but it doesn't make a whole lot of sense by applying the latest software updates my system became incredibly tasked. Thanks.
ski
Seems like the update is the problem. Try reverting back to the previous version of the OS that you were using. That'll almost surely cure the problem that you, eh, didn't have before you updated. It's unfortunate, but these days OSX updates cannot be considered benign or even helpful. This is not conspiracy theory, it's just an unfortunate fact of life with Apple these days. Along with existing legacy-model computers, there are many new computer models out there which all need to work amidst new releases of software (Logic 8 is one example), 3rd party drivers, and on top of that, OSX updates (some minor, some major, as in the case of Leopard). IMO, if you do the permutations there's no way it could possibly all be tested in time for the release of an OS update that can be guaranteed to work without a hitch. My advice is to only update if there is some really dire need. Otherwise, leave your system alone. Try to "downdate" as it were. If you're successful, make a bootable CLONE of your system (and update it regularly). This is something you can fall back on if a future update fails as this one seems to have done. nylarch
A guy on the Ableton forum created a nice rollback: www.timothyallan.com/files/200801airportfix.zip I've used it and seemed to cure the problem for me although some people on the thread that contained this link were reporting that it didn't work for them. I'm running 10.4.11 on a 2.2 gHz MBP if that helps. Really amazingly crappy that this happened - turning off Airport is not an acceptable solution IMHO. perversity
why is turning airport off not acceptable. Really, you shouldn't be surfing the web or checking email while working with Logic anyway. That's kind of like using a power drill to hammer a nail in

That's kind of like using a power drill to hammer a nail in Mmmm, it all depends on the system, really... When I'm on a project I'm typically running Logic, VSL, playing back picture, Excel, KeyMap, all while connected to the 'net running Mail, Safari, Transmit. Oh, and I'm running a version of Logic 7 that doesn't take advantage of all the processors. This is on PPC Quad. I don't have horsepower problems. So... nylarch
you shouldn't be surfing the web or checking email while working with Logic anyway thanks Mom. What if I want to have a SFLogicNinja tutorial (OK, pron) up in my second monitor while I work on something? I at least want the option.
David Nahmani
Personally I don't mind, I use a wired connection on my Mac Pro. But some of the Logic 8 features require an internet connection anyway, so it would be good if that worked for those who need Airport.

Lots of instances of AU instruments, and I hate freezing tracks, so that's what works for me.

Besides saving channel strip settings to .mac, and registering, what features require an internet connection? (maybe I've overlooked some new function?) ski
Your right, Ooh! I'm right once today! (It's been one of those days...) it does depend on the system. Unfortunately, MY system(macbook w 2.2 GHz Intel duo, 2 g ramm) doesn't like when Logic is running alongside anything! Wow, that sucks. That computer should be a powerhouse. But then again, if you're running just the right (or "wrong") combination of OS and Logic (as I've been reading) you might just find yourself in a processing pickle. nylarch
Just an update on this.... Last night I saw a new software update that had a firmware update to my MBP I wanted to run. I also saw it contained an Aiport update and I stupidly accepted that, thinking Apple had to have cleared up these problems from the last update. Don't run it. It gave me the same problems the last one did. I then ran the fix I've been recommending in this string and it completely took down Airport for me. I'm trying to find a way to roll it back.... nylarch
here's the Apple forum discussion on this issue if it helps anyone: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1463824&tstart=0 It appears that its essential to repair permissions after rolling back the last airport update. Should set things straight.
