Volume Pedal to MIDI Converter?

Recommended Posts

Heya,

I have two beloved Ernie Ball mono volume control pedals, those big cast aluminium jobs with the string around the pot, that are under my console here. These are typically used in a guitar effects chain, but I have them plugged into an old General Music Ground Control that converts the volume pot to MIDI cc with an adjustable curve.

The problem is the ol' Ground Control is starting to get flaky and unreliable, so I'm looking for something that could replace it. There's plenty of stuff out there that accepts standard, (well, either Roland or Yamaha standard) expression pedals, but I'm looking for something that converts a 250kohm volume pot pedal specifically.

I've not had luck finding something. I'm resigned to possibly repairing the Ground Control if necessary, but I'd sure like something new to replace it. Anyone know of anything?

been researching this a bit

yeah kenton is the best one on the market-most features-solid build

http://www.audiomidi.com/Pro2000-mkII-P6455.aspx

Also check this thats coming out in about a month

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MP201/

Not quite as many features as the kenton but with the pedal can do other stuff

hook up some moogerfoogers and there are some cool possibilities

I've read some good stuff about this one too

http://www.frostwave.com/quadmiditocv/

well good luck with it :D

Thanks guys!

I've sent Kenton an email asking them as it's not apparent which product might be best suited, if at all. There seems to be no specific mention of volume pedals, only expression. It will be interesting to hear what they say.

Kenton will help.

They are great at custom solutions and love a challenge !

LOL, I could have used that article a couple years before its publishing date. Would have saved me a lot of poking around with an ohmeter trying to get my Yamaha expression pedals to work with Fatar and Cheetah stuff! I eventually figured it out on my own, luckily.

Worst case scenario, would it be possible to replace the pots in your EB's with 10K's (or whatever might be required for whatever CV convertor you end up getting?

That's a possibility. Here's what the pot looks like:

Pretty standard longshaft affair with that collar setscrewed on. So maybe I could get some 10k linear Alps pots or something and convert them to exression pedals. Then get this:

I've learned that the Boss GT-5 had these same kind of inputs my Ground Control has, ie supported audio taper volume pedals and converted to MIDI.

In my search I came across this wacky gizmo:

Check it out. It's a pedal that mechanically connects to an effects knob. Not so sure about that one!

Señor Ocho,

Couldn't get the EB link to work. :( But I saw the other ones. I noticed the Kenton takes the same kind of Roland and Korg footpedals of which I have several laying around here doing nothing. Should push come to shove you can have them!

Or I could just steal their pot! And yours too while I'm at it!

You can't steal something that's give to you as a gift. But if it makes you feel better, I'll send them to you with a bill and you can refuse to pay it. That way you can say you stole them from ol' Schwartzie. Meanwhile I'll be glad to see them go to good use, Mr. Sensitive Cheeseboy!
