RMS vs. Peak values.

Not specifically a Logic question, so feel free to move this post.

 

I've been making DJ mixes and editing them in Logic. Until recently I was using the Peak value on the Level Meter to try and average out the volume across the mix, not paying any attention to the RMS values.

 

The last edit I made, I used the RMS values as a base, around -15 to -10dB, and controlled the peaks (noting above +3dB) with a brick wall limiter, which lead to a better result.

 

Does anyone have any advise on getting a good balance between RMS and Peak levels?

 

Does this vary with different genres?

 

I work mainly with electronic/dance music.
