how 2 audition a midi track while selecting an audio track?

Maybe I am missing something, but imagine: you'd like to listen to your live input midi synth performance and at a same time trying to change some audio track settings during its' playback, like an amount of reverb etc.. So as far as I understand, I need to record enable a midi track to hear anything, but at a moment when I select back to an audio track - hoping to change something, my rec. arm switch on a midi track goes OFF and I hear only voices in my head instead of a synth... this makes me furious! I can't find anything in manual regarding this.. I would love to match a sound of an audio and synth before I start to record it, but I simply can't find a way how to audition both at a same time while switching back and forth to different tracks (without loosing auditioning) . Please help.. _v_

I love L8.. gotta say that at the start of all posts like this...

However, the way Logic does this is just plain ___________. Insert your word here.

Why can't an armed track just stay that way w/ o any other fiddling/setting... and just get input from whatever it's set to w/o getting "un-selected"?

Why the need to go to the Mixer for this?

Midi too.

Sure you can set each external controller's midi channel...record a few midi tracks at once, and then de-mix blah blah..., but what's wrong with just setting the midi input on each channel you want to record to a sep input ala Cubase?.. and go to work...

Something like this should not take a manual or forum to get going.. unless you want to go deeper.

Just another Mid-evil way Logic does a few things... compared to the great things it offers.

I wanna take that survey! :)

It won't let me.

There are several reasons.

First, ease of use. You have a bunch of software instrument and external MIDI tracks, you just click on one of them and blam, that's the one your MIDI controller is playing/controlling. How easy is that? If it did NOT deselect all the other rec-arm tracks, you'd have to do it manually, and everybody would complain about how complex and illogical Logic is, that you have to perform three operations everytime you want to play or record a soft/MIDI instrument.

Second, CPU efficiency. When you rec-arm a software instrument track, it takes a whole lot more of CPU than when you don't. So if every time you selected a software instrument it became and stayed rec-armed, it would quickly be impossible to playback a project with all those software instrument in "live" mode. It would be impossible to select various tracks while the project is playing back. And.. . everybody would surely complain about that!

So whatever Logic's functionality, there will always be situations when it's very helpful and logical, and other situations where it's a little more convoluted and at first seem absurd.

I think midi handling in Logic's sequencer is inconsistent: you can assign output ports to tracks but NOT input ports.

So it's not possible to route midi directly between tracks - a serious limitation compared to other DAWs.

IMO midi routing in sequencers should work basically like audio routing. 'Reaper' is a good example.
