When is silence,.... silent?

I have a drum loop which has a layer of noise which is almost inaudible unless you listen loud though headphone or very, very loud through the genelecs...

Its a pretty clean loop which i made myself with no decay efects like rev or dly. I have since cut (what are supposed to be) the slient bits out and rebounced. The noise is better but it seems that both waves ren eq and psp vintage warmer (the only two plugin on the loop) both add their own bit of unwanted noise athlough it seems to vary from bounce to bounce. i did eventually get a version which to my ears was silent inbetween drum hits.

my question is primarily about the waveform view in the sample editor in logic. visually i cant see much of difference between there being noise and no noise. the waveform line at zero always seems to be thicker than the constant staight line at zero. Is this line not be trusted so close to zero?

sorry if my post is a bit convoluted :(

steve,

How much of the noise you see in the sample editor is going to depend on your vertical zoom settings.

If the noise is low enough, you can remove it in Soundtrack pro without adversely affecting the sound. It's a pretty decent denoiser. Follow the instructions carefully about the analysis steps.

thanks fader 8,

i'll keep soundtrack pro in mind....

even at the highest vertical magnification the noise barely registers graphically whilst silence looks.... um, not silent.....no biggy though, i guess theres no substitute for listening on as many speakers/headphones as you can....

have you tried strip silence.

i use it all the time.

highlite the region ( loop ), run strip silence, then hilite the new regions and merge.

i don't use loops, i play and record live. this works fine on audio files,

i would try it though. it only takes about 10 seconds for the whole

process. if you don't like the results.....you only have to undo twice and

you're back where you were.

no harm , no foul.

Fade the regions in and out when you're done for smoother results.
