Apogee Duet/ Edirol FA66

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question I'm just about to make the switch from PC to Mac and will need to get an audio interface. I'm not sure whether to buy the Duet or Edirol FA66, I'm swaying towards the Duet at the moment finances permitting. I've got a hopefully simple question though:

Will I be able to play mp3s in iTunes whilst playing my guitar (plugged into the interface) and listening to both with my headphones plugged into the interface. I can do this now on my PC and I'd be gutted if I couldn't do it on the Mac.

TIA

with a pc you can usually use the soundcard's software mixer to route the input straight to the output - on a mac you can't really do this (to my knowledge) without have a program like logic or garageband open with an input monitoring enabled track - so doing something like that would be your best best

i am also thinking to go for the edirol.

I am looking for some first hand expirience with the machine.

There is this guy on ebay.com selling it saying that will only work on PC, and Not on Mac.

How weird is that since the drivers for MAc are those of Mac OS x?

I like the dedicated volume knob, balanced outputs, digital Outputs, which duet is lacking.

Also the Duet is pretty big. I mean a lot bigger than seems on the pics.

My first choice for weeks woudl be Tc Konnekt8 or 24d. BUt they still did not figure out the drivers, and users on the forum are starting to get very inpatient. Seems like not a good time to buy Tc Interface.

Anyone has any comments on the use of Edirol FA-66 on MAc? The ones i managed to see are from PC users.

anyone?

I've used an FA-101 on a Mac and it worked great. You can easily do what you're wanting to do, either by playing iTunes alongside Logic and monitor your guitar through Logic.

Or you can use the Zero Latency monitoring which DOES exist, in the form of a mix knob on the front of the box, routing the inputs straight to the outputs.

The Duet, will do what the FA-66 does but only for 2 channels at a time. BUT it will do it much better, and sound nice. The Mic Pre's in the 66 aren't great and are a bit hissy at high levels. Unless you need 6 inputs, i'd go with the Apogee for sure. It has better integration with Logic, but saying that, the FA's drivers are good and completely hassle free.
