4string
Hi: I am relatively new to MAC and Logic. I like would to know if my system can handle simultaneous recording of 16 to 18 tracks. Before I spend the $$$ for the hardware My system: Dual 2.0 GHz PowerPC G5, 2.5 Gb RAM, OSX 10.4.11 Glyph 160 GB GT 050 external Fire Wire drive; additional 500 Gb internal drive Logic Pro 8, Pro Tools 7.4 My current inputs are either a Digidesign MBox2 or a Presonus Firepod. I would like to move to a Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 I/O for my primary interface, with an ADAT attached Presonus DigiMax FS to get my 16 inputs. Will my system be able to handle simultaneous recording into Logic on 16 tracks? Would I be able to attach my MBox2 via S/PDIF to move up to 18 tracks? My alternative is to trade in my MBox2 for a Digi 003 and add a Presonus Digimax FS via ADAT to get 16 tracks. Any comments and/or opinions welcome. Any suggestions for an alternate hardware path are also welcome. Thank you Colin
Holger Lagerfeldt
The G5 can handle it, though I don't know about your sound card. Use a PCI based sound card, that's faster and more reliable. RME is a good choice. Connect converters to that. Also, I would record to an extra internal SATA disk, not a FW disk. Perhaps this exceeds your budget? tovinho
HI I use a G5 with 2 motu 24I/O and I record 48 tracks at once. As I don't use an external SATA drive, I record on an internal 500 Gb second hd. Hope it helps you
4string
Thank you for the replies. I 've got 12 tracks waiting to be recorded and all I have to do is get that hardware. I want to try recording 'live' instead of the 'endless overdubs' process. Hopefully we can get some of the 'magic of the momment' when things magically come together. Holger Lagerfeldt
You'll be quite please with Quick Swipe recording in Logic, which also works for multiple tracks recorded at the same sime.

4string
Here is a quote from the Apple Logic site about Quick swipe: Quick Swipe comping With breakthrough Quick Swipe comping, you can simply swipe over the best portions of each take to create a seamless comp, complete with transition-smoothing crossfades. To Lagerfeld: Yes the RME stuff is out of my budget. I have the internal 500 Gb drive, and I will record to that as recommended. Thanks to all for your help. pantomimeHorse
I have no problem with 15/17 tracks to an internal ATA Western Digital, partitioned properly. - As you see from sig, my kit is by no means the latest. - Your G5 should waltz it. - C
