dbungert
Hi there. I have a scattering of music theory knowledge from classes for various instruments and such, but I forget most of what I once knew. I'm looking for a book that will help fill in the gaps. Any thoughts? Something that assumes I'm starting from ground level would probably be best. I've also seen and used http://musictheory.net/, but I'd prefer a book. In more recent times, I'm using Logic 8 to learn synths, so my current focus is more on composition than performance. The straightforward amazon search pulls up, among the early results, Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory and several For Dummies style books. Not looking for a "Dummies" type thing. -Dan
Madman900
Hey Not sure if you're from England, but the ABRSM Graded Theory books are quite well structured (examples and exercises). Unless you have absolutely no knowledge of theory though, I advise you start Grade 4 upwards...
ChrisByrd
I found 'Composing Music: A New Approach' by William Russo excellent - you learn a lot of theory the painless way as you compose actual music. Chris
dcbassdc
the Bass Grimore is pretty boss, http://www.amazon.com/Bass-Grimoire-Complete-Adam-Kadmon/dp/0825821819 there is also a guitar grimore, but I don't have any XP with that. Edit: You can also google theory sylibi and see what books the Profs. use and pick those up, or go to a local college music library, they may have quite a few resources. lyghtningrod
The book used for the basic music class at my community college is Elementary Rudiments of Music by Barbara Wharram. It will take you through all the basics.
