Hi

First of all, great site!! :D

Great to have found a site specially for logic.

I've already been asking questions at harmony-central & logic discussion board, but still can't figure my problem out....

I bought a virus classic last week, but I can't get any sound out of my speakers...

I want to use it as a multi timbral instrument, but even before that I can't get any sound out of it  even with the external instrument feature...

Here's how I have things set up:

Virus classic midi in/out to motu midiexpressXT midi in/out (port8)

midi keyboard midi out to motu midiexpressXT midi in (port1)

Virus classic audio output1 L/R to motu 828mk2 audio input 3&4

motu midiexpress XT USB to G5 2.0Ghz USB

I was reading through this forum related to midi set up, and found out about setting things in different layers? but my logic shows wierd letters and characters, so I don't know which is which.(maybe because i use a japanese version of logic set as english use)

My main goal is to set virus classic as a multi-instrument in logic.

I found a site(japanese) where it shows step-by-step methods of setting external hardware synths as multi-instrument, but the site asks for custombank settings using bank MSB & LSB numbers, and the virus manual didn't come with voice list, bank MSB, and bank LSB numbers. I got the voice list using the sounddiver downloadable at www.access-music.de, and i found a MIDI implementation chart in the manual (which i have no idea what it is).

Sorry, if I'm going out of line... I'm new to MIDI and don't know what I'm doing...

It would be great if someone can lead me through this MIDI chaos I'm in...

thanks

Let's try to get you through the first step: getting some sound.

On your MIDI tracks in Arrange, make sure all of them are set to port 8. Select one of them and make sure it's record enabled.

Then shift click an audio track (click on its record button as well so it's red). But before you do that make sure the audio track is set to input 5-6 (by default, on the MOTU, input 3-4 show up as 5-6 because 1-2 are the front preamps...).

Any luck?

I would never have figured this out w/o your help :?

It's already setup.

Control-double click the name of the object in the track list. This opens the environment, showing you the multi-instrument that controls the Virus. You can use the Text Tool (looks like a vertical cursor) to name it something like "Virus Classic".

Once it works the way you want don't forget: File > Save as Template. If you want it to open by default when you open Logic, name it 'Autoload'. Otherwise, any other name will do. Click 'save'.

Thanks Daivid!!!

I got it set up as a multi-instrument in logic!!!

I'm starting to love logic for what it can do even more!! 8)

One thing...

I pushed the multi button on Virus and tried selecting different names in the voice list window which shows up in the environment, but I didn't get any sound change. Could this be the Bank settings??

OR

maybe it's something I have to do in virus, so I'll try reading through the manuals again.

Thanks alot for getting me started though!! I really appreciate your support.

a week ago I couldn't get any sound out, but now I can actually hear things :D

Thank you sooo much for helping me out!

I don't know how I can thank you...

If it helps, I can spread the word about this site to English speaking Logic users in Japan.

Just wanted to let you know I got things going 8)
