bongkaren
my problem is that i can't seem to work for at least 10 tracks of softsynth. it slows down on my laptop. need expert advice...
David Nahmani
How much RAM do you have? Your 867 laptop is not a super-powerful computer, and 10 tracks of soft synth, depending on the synth, starts to put a lot of strain on the computer. It might just be normal for your computer to slow down. Try freezing the tracks!
bongkaren
640 RAM! finally, tried freezing other tracks. now it's running smoothly. hey david thanks. just bought logic pro 7 months ago. i've been using Digital Performer for years and shifting to Logic is a logical choice
David Nahmani
You definitely need more RAM to run more than 10 virtual synths! But honestly the thing is, you don't have the most powerful computer anyway, so adding RAM is only going to help so much before the next limitation of your computer shows up: the CPU power. It's something to consider: wether you can afford to just trade-it in for a faster powerbook, or if you'd rather spend just a little bit for more RAM and keep working with the freeze function. Good luck!
deblogifier
you know, i don't even think it's RAM... it's just raw cpu cycles. soft synths have a lot of simulating to do.
David Nahmani
you know, i don't even think it's RAM... it's just raw cpu cycles. soft synths have a lot of simulating to do. Well, it's actually both. Every plug-in needs RAM to be launched, and every plug-in which uses samples loads those samples into RAM. The more the RAM space is cramped, the harder it is to work. It's pretty easy to monitor those things with metering tools like the Activity Monitor... (Applications>Utilities)
bongkaren
definitely i'm going to trade-in my 867 mhz to a newer one. just waiting for a G5 laptop to be out in the market. any news about that David?
David Nahmani
No news on G5 Powerbooks anytime soon. I think that's one of the reason Apple is moving to Intel, they are tired of waiting for IBM to be able to put a G5 in a laptop...
Ignacio Perez
Thats correct ! that is why they are going to Intel....dont like it though......if "we" could stay as far as possible form the PC "area", the better....
bongkaren
hope that shifting to intel for chips isn't a bad idea. let's wait and see for the next generation macs.
David Nahmani
Honestly, I'm sure it's a great idea. Cheaper, faster, less heat. We'll finally have some powerful powerbooks!
elppa cam
Honestly, I'm sure it's a great idea. Cheaper, faster, less heat. We'll finally have some powerful powerbooks! Yeah... my only concern is that Homer Simpson has one them there Intel chips in his brain... uh... huh...
bongkaren
less heat! actually that is my concern re powerbooks. i've 4 powerbooks from 520c to G4 and that's one thing i've noticed, hot on the lap.
