safetydept
Hi, I am having difficulty bouncing a surround project in Logic Pro 8. When I do the bounce, I can only obtain either one large file (interleaved) or a Left and Right channel (Split)... but I need channels for LRCS, as it is a surround mix that I need to deliver to a studio for a film print. After checking the help guide, it seems that this is possible, I just can't figure out how to do it!! Any suggestions? I need to have this done really soon and would appreciate any help. thanks. Rockdude9k
Is there any chance that you have the surround downmixer on. If you do then it will convert your Surround mix to stereo thus resulting in only .L and .R split files. I've bounced 5.1 mix's out of logic plenty of times without having a problem so there has got to be a fix.
safetydept
Thank you, it seems as though this could be what is causing the problem... Can you tell me where the controls for this downmixer is located? Couldn't find anything on it in the manual and it's my first time using Logic.... I am still somewhat unfamiliar with the ins and outs.... thanks again!!!!
Rockdude9k
It's a plug in you insert on the master output. If you didn't recognize it from my last post then it's probably something else. When you bounce out a single file that is not split open it in QuickTime and then see if it has all the proper extensions by looking at it's info. I beleive it's under the file or edit menu. safetydept
yes, it is a 5.1 surround audio file, and quicktime confirms it in the file info.... I have even tried to re-export it via Quicktime, selecting the "6 distinct files" option, but all it gives me is (again) a single aiff, which I am guessing has all the components interleaved. This type of file is useful for burning to DVD but is the opposite of what I need presently. At this point, it is seeming like my best option will just be to record the outs of each channel seperately and then re-configure them in a new project in ProTools, which is what the studio which will print the audio uses. Hopefully the mix isn't entirely thrown off in the process. the only other thing i have found online regarding this (see below link) this suggests that i am unable to do this because i am not using a proper sound card at the moment.... in which case the problem will be solved when I go over to my sound engineer's studio to master the track this afternoon. http://www.gearslutz.com/board/music-computers/161569-logic-8-problem-5-1-surround-bounce.html
safetydept
Ok, so it turns out that the issue was the sound card after all!! Now that I am plugged into one with enough outs, Logic will export all the surround tracks. The only issue I am having now is that my mix actually needs to be LCRS, not 5.1. And when I try to export an LCRS mix, it gives me channel bounces for 5.1 (with Rs, Ls and LFE tracks). Both of these surround channels and LFE track are silent, however. I have also noticed that in the master volume, there are only three active channels - L, R, and C - and nothing is going out to the surround, although I am sending sounds there, and hearing them on my non-surround preview monitors. My solution which I have come up with is to remix in 5.1, which is what I did originally before finding out it needed to be LRCS, and then the studio will be able to convert this to the necessary LRCS tracks. If you know of what I am doing incorrectly so as not to be getting the LCRS mix right, please let me know, otherwise I will continue this slightly more extended route, which nonetheless seems as though it will work and which makes me very very happy. fader8
the only other thing i have found online regarding this (see below link) this suggests that i am unable to do this because i am not using a proper sound card at the moment.... Which is exactly why we persist in having people include their system spec's in their signature. Had you done so, you would have received the answer you needed yesterday. I'm curious how you've been mixing in surround without a multi-output sound card. The only issue I am having now is that my mix actually needs to be LCRS, not 5.1. Then open Logic's preferences and configure the Audio-Surround tab for LCRS instead of 5.1.
Rockdude9k
Ya i was curious about the same thing. How are you mixing without a multioutput system.
safetydept
Yes, I already configured Logic's setting for LCRS. No dice. Maybe because the surround was set to 5.1 at the outset? To answer the other question, I have been mixing in stereo up until two weeks ago, but the soundtrack is going to a 35mm print with LCRS capability, so I sketched out the tracks spatially and then made a version "blind", then previewed it at my audio engineers' studio. When you don't have the gear, make do with what you've got....
