Taybot
I'm learning the EXS 24 and I really like it but I'm wondering is there a way to make it so when you hit one pad, 2 pads are triggered, so I can layer drum samples? Thanks!
Audiogrocery
I'm wondering is there a way to make it so when you hit one pad, 2 pads are triggered, so I can layer drum samples? Search the manual about the environment "Mapped Instrument" and how to use it. It gives the best results for multi layering...
David Nahmani
Just layer a new zone - drag a sample and adjust its zone (the rectangle on top of the keyboard in the EXS24 instrument editor) to it's at the same position as the other zone/sample:
Taybot
coo thx! do u think esx is better than ultrabeat? I really like ultrabeat except the only way I know to layer the drums is through the environment window, using a chord memorizer and for some reason that won't let you layer until you get up to a certain note, i think it's c2 or c3... I think you're going to start seeing a pattern in my answers - but I don't think one is better than the other, they each have their qualities and flaws. You've discovered a limitation of Ultrabeat, for example. In general the EXS24 is amazing for sample work. Ultrabeat has the step sequencer that can be conducive to great inspiration when making beats / programming patterns. It's also obviously a full fledged drum synth, which the EXS24 isn't. Taybot
yea it just seems weird that you can't layer drums easier on ultrabeat. Oh well though it's pretty nice how you can adjust the eqs right there on the ultrabeat and then if you want you can send individual drums to its own fader on the mixer. but also, is there a way to send each individual sample on the EXS to its own fader on the mixer? Yes, same as Ultrabeat: instantiate the EXS24 as a multi-outputs, and in the EXS instrument editor, choose the desired output for each zone or group in the "output" column. Taybot
When I try to add samples to an existing group, it just layers the notes over my samples, then when I slide it to the next open keys, it pitches the samples up? I was wondering how you add samples to an existing group?? Thanks!
David Nahmani
Drag and drop the zone into the group on the left column.
Taybot
I'm still wondering how to do add new sounds to an existing group? I chop up the new sample I want and when I drag it into the existing group folder (group 1) on the left, that doesn't work at all. When I do that NONE of my samples play any longer. If I just slide it directly in so it goes underneat Zones 1-6, it shows up as Zone 7, but it doesn't show up on the keyboard and also, all my zones are messed up. They will play but the sounds are all distorted. Is there a way to add zones to an existing group? Or do you have to make the group perfectly on your first try? Thanks! David Nahmani
Is there a way to add zones to an existing group? That's the question I just answered in my previous answer. it shows up as Zone 7, but it doesn't show up on the keyboard and also, all my zones are messed up. They will play but the sounds are all distorted. That's obviously not normal behavior. Not sure what's going on there. Try doing some more testing with one or two samples until you understand the behavior of samples and zones?
Taybot
so it's supposed to be as simple as sliding the chopped up sample into the existing group? And then it'll line up after all the other notes and play at the correct speed without speeding up or slowing down? Man I don't know how to do it then.. when I try that it says zone 7 but it doesn't show up on that keyboard and every other zone in the group becomes super slowed down...have you ever heard of that happening? At least yesterday it would show up on the keyboard and I would slide it to the next key up but then it would be sped up, now it just isn't even showing up on the keyboard and all the other zones are really slowed down... David Nahmani
I'm not even sure why you're creating a group in the first place?
Taybot
that's what the guy in the youtube tutorial i watched said to do. I didn't know you could use esx without creating a group. anyways i slid them all into ungrouped zones and now they don't play anyways...
David Nahmani
Yeah, keep it simple. No need to make a group right now. After slicing your loop, drag all the regions at once to the EXS Instrument editor and choose "Drums" zone without range. Make sure all the zones have the same note for "Key" (under pitch), and the same values for Lo and Hi under "Key Range". That'll layer them all (if your goal was to have all the slices layered into one single sound).

Taybot
so when I play my sample and then hit the next pad on my mpd, the last sample just keeps playing, i was wondering how you make it so the last sample stops when i hit my next sample? I used to know how to do this but completely forgot. I think maybe I only know how to do it in groups or something ha I dunno. 1 shot is different from what I'm talkin about I think. thanks! Taybot
shoot it's called Poly I think but I don't see it under zones? Do you have to make a group to use poly? thanks!
David Nahmani
You have to place all the zones in the same group and in the group, set Poly to 1.

Taybot
i know i've been asking tons of questions about exs but I can't figure this stuff out...in a youtube tutorial I swear someone said you can adjust where a sample begins and ends, just right there in the zone screen, after it is chopped up. does anyone know how to do that? I figured it'd be easily done under the "Start" column but no matter how far I push the number up, it still starts at the same spot. Thanks again! Press the little triangle box next to the sample and choose "open in sample editor" Now you can edit the start, end and loop points visually. You should definitely read the documentation on the EXS. I think it will answer all your questions. http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicstudio/instruments/#chapter=12%26section=
Taybot
i open it in the sample editor but then I adjust it and it doesn't change it in my ungrouped zones. The sample starts at the same place it used to. That instruction book you gave me the link to was pretty helpful so thx for that but I'm trying to figure this out because it would save me tons of time so I don't have to chop my samples perfectly, i can adjust it after. Thanks!
Taybot
that tutorial you put me through to says: Sample Start and End fields: Set the sample start and end points, respectively. Control-click either field to open a menu that allows you to open the sample in the Logic Pro Sample Editor (or an external editor), where you can set the start and end points graphically. See “Editing Samples in the EXS24 mkII Sample Editor.” the problem is, no matter how much I push the Start number up to, it always starts at the same spot. What am I doing wrong??
