orchestral samples

Recommended Posts

Garritan Personal Orchestra is amazing for value! It runs smoothly in Logic and the samples are incredible. Version 3 uses the Kontakt Player which is multi-timbral and has bult-in templates. The panning and levels are already set-up which saves hours and hours of time. One of the best investments I've made this year. I would highly recommend it.

The question is like 'Um, can anyone suggest a coupla cars to me ?' What's the point ? You could at best assemble a list of everything out there which is what a Google search would have done much quicker than all us typing monkeys.

What is your price range ? What is your profiency as a composer/arrannger ? Are you dabbling just for fun or are you ghost-scoring the next Hans Zimmer score ? Does your computer have enough grunt for a decent library ? Can you offload some to external machines ? Are you going for instant Hollywood Sound or something more versatile ?

Tell us.

You have some interesting points, Christian, but the one singled out could be better expressed as 'does you computer have enough grunt to run a 3rd party plug in".

I'm getting some huge orchestras on a 'dated' computer because Logic/EXS 24 is so efficient. The size of the library is limited to disk space.

does anyone really like the East West products in here?

I have Gold Pro XP and love it, but mind you I am still on G5 with Kompakt player, and when I switch to Intel I plan to get Kontakt since I've heard so many bad things about Play...

Really?' What bad things have you heard? I sorta farted around with it the other day and liked it. I'm thinking about buying the composer bundle

15 DVD-Rs worth, simple?

Sure. Backup to an external 100Gb drive. Simple.

Hi,

Well, my whole point is that HDDs fail (so do DVD-Rs, too, I guess), so, as per my question, I am wondering what their policy is regarding loss of data that you've legitimately bought from them.

Cheers,

Glenn

Interesting;

I exchanged emails with someone at Kirk Hunter, and they will let you re-download if your 'homework' gets eaten by your C2D 'Dog.' Conditions; must re-download from the same ISP, and must have the pertinent billing data.

I also exchanged emails with someone from IKMultimedia, and I was assured that my records showed that I owned T-Racks Plugin for the VS, and that, yes, I am eligible for the Miroslav crossgrade. What is interesting is this; I have no memory of registering at IKMultimedia, and when I tried to retrieve my password, trying all 3 of the web email addresses that I use for these kinds of things, none of them matched anything in their record. So, I write back to the guy from IK, explaining to him that I can't login, could he please send me my login data, and he then tells me that he can't find anything under my name or email address. If that was the case, how would he know that I have the T-Racks plugin? Something is a little skewed with this picture. I emailed back, asking him this question, and I haven't heard back from him. Hmmmm....

In any case, I've decided to change my mind and go with the Kirk Hunter Diamond library. With the €/$ exchange rate, it will cost less than the full version of the Miroslav Philharmonik.

I'll have to wait for Christmas for that though.

Cheers,

Glenn

Couldn't disagree more.

I just bought the GPO 4 trying to improve my Sibelius Orchestra sound. Silly mistake. It sound horrible. Logic bundled samples are fare superior. I just wasted 150 bucks.

I've had a backup drive for both system and project HDs for a while now but I'm paranoid enough that I'm thinking of getting a 2nd backup. As my geek brother puts it, "data only exists when it's in three places at the same time."

HDs are cheap but your data isn't!

East West/Quantum Leap Libraries are the BOMB!! They will change the way you write! I love the sounds. I used to use Miroslav before investing. If Miroslav is a 10 out of 10 then EWQL is a 75!!! They are pricey but worht it.

The PLAY engine is cool and fairly simple BUT finding out it might not "play well with Logic" (no pun intended)

Been hearing rumors about it crashing Logic. And heard from a very reliable Certified Logic instructor the sam and he is working around it by running it as a standalone via the IAC Midi ports and sounflowerbed to route the audio back.

I personally messed around with that setup today and the IAC part is simple.. SoundFlower part LOOKS simple but was a huge pain.

I am still doing research on it and will report back with more. Do not let these issue deter you from getting EWQL with the PLAY engine. The sounds are TOO good.

I'm a little late to this discussion, but I just asked the same question (which orchestral plugin is best) to an acquaintance of mine. He has a long list of credits: a Tony-nominated composer/arranger, and has had a recording studio for 25 years. He now exclusively uses Logic with several uber Macs, and engineers/produces many CDs from top artists.

According to him:

1) Garritan has old samples, and has not remained up-to-date.

2) Miroslav is good, and is actually the first orchestral plugin he purchased several years ago. They were top-of-the-line for about three years, but have fallen behind newer entries.

3) Vienna has good samples, but there are problems as well. The miking positions aren't always optimal, and sometimes it is difficult to match the presence of different bowings. Also, there is a fairly steep learning curve with the engine, and given that Logic requires enough brainpower as it is, perhaps it's better to look for something more intuitive.

4) He uses East/West Symphonic (Platinum), and didn't express any shortcomings. He recommended that I go with Gold if I could, that Silver wouldn't offer enough detail for the project I'm working on.

I ordered Gold yesterday from Sweetwater.

Are the sounds themselves actually better than my existing Gold Pro XP that came with Kompakt? I thought the actual samples were the same. Anyway, let us know how that goes! I'm also wondering if you can also play existing EWQLSO libraries through the free Kontakt Player 3? That would be handy for those of us who don't necessarily want to fork out for the full Kontakt.

Far be it for me to defend Garritan, but there ARE a few gems in GPO... some of the flutes, harp, and celesta. Oh, and some of the solo violins and celli are very usable if you EQ the crap out of them (they sound thin and ugly unless you work 'em). Is it worth forking over for just those sounds? Prolly not. But if you took the plunge already (as TC did) then IMO it's not a complete waste of money. And it wouldn't be my first choice.

Then again, keep in mind that any samples, no matter how brilliant, won't work for every style of music. Or every tempo. So there really isn't such a thing as one-library-fits-all. Not even the venerated VSL.

A good starter collection for around $1000 or less: something from KH (even if it's just the Emerald collection) and the VSL "Special Edition".

I have some of the older Miroslav samples for EXS, and they can definitely rock in the right context. So there's no telling what'll work for you... it'll all depend on your style(s) of music and your budget.
