timothyc1985
Hey people, Im new to this forum. A little introduction is needed me thinks. My name's Tim, been heavily into house for years and started making music on logic a few years ago. I recently started my last year of university here in Manchester (Business Degree). I am currently shortlisting ideas for my undergraduate dissertation and one thing has become apparent, I would LOVE to write it about Logic. I think it has an interesting history (in the way it changed the way we work with sound) and this would of course span back to the acquisition of Emagic as well as looking at Apple's business methods of that period of time, and up to present day. I came on to the forum today to see what users of Logic think about this idea. I would really like to hear your views on the subject, good or bad! Any response is greatly appreciated. Nublu
My enthusiasm for Logic today is the result of a confluence of: 1) Apple buys Next computers which brings with it the Next Step development environment. ( which has now evolved into and called Cocoa ) 2) They adopt BSD Unix as the core of its' operating System. Unix is part of very fertile and productive development cultures in the Free Software, Open Source, and Academic communities. 3) With the elegance that is Cocoa, the stabile operating environment that is BSD, plus the purchase of Emagic: it all has the potential to become Power meets Access meets Creativity meets Growth. Logic was already really good. With Apple, Logic's core ideas have a better more robust playground to stomp around in. 4) Snow Leopard lays down a nice foundation for working with emerging hardware. (hehehe). 5) For me the computer is already the Grand Master Instrument. (used to be the piano). What's it going to be in 10 yrs.? ( actually, if parents ask me, I suggest that they give their kids singing lessons first and then start them on a program like Logic.) If you choose to write your dissertation based on Logic Audio, I hope you have a lot of fun. Cheers.

It might be helpful if you gave us some idea of your thesis. What is the research question? Just writing a history paper isn't going to get you a good grade. What would your position be? toysun
anyway........ The history of Logic is pretty interesting - especially if you go back to Notator for Atari, and then Emagic's original jump to Apple (competing with Performer and Cubase), then the purchase/distribution of Emagic by another company (I'm sorry I don't remember it) the reverting back to Emagic, then finally the Apple acquisition. To be biz school thesis like, I'd look at the quality of the product (subjective, I know) but to be really thesis-like, you'd want to study the overall lifecycle of a niche program that get acquired by a big company, especially one that makes operating systems and hardware.... hmm...... maybe this is gong to be my thesis!
