thabends
Hello So I did some searching before posting this, but lack of searching only post titles makes it a headache. Anyway, I just bought a MacBook Pro and will be purchasing Logic in the next few weeks. So, i'm need of an audio interface for light home recording of guitars, drum machine, vocals, etc.. My needs are: -$300-$500 -Firewire -MIDI IN/OUT -At least 2 XLR/Instrument Inputs -Output for powered monitors I've been looking at Presonus interfaces mostly. Any other recommendations? thanks
David Nahmani
Apogee Duet + some cheap MIDI interface.
CBA713
Seriously. I was in your boat last January, knowing (myself) virtually nothing on DAW recording, but I picked up the Duet, and it is exactly what I needed/wanted. Works with Logic and Macs right out of the box, as Logic has built in Apogee stuff. David's right about the cheap MIDI interface too... I use my Duet through my FW400 in my MBP and then a... I think it's called a X-MU MIDI to USB cable straight into the USB. It's like $30 and with an MBP you just plug and play. You can find it on Sweetwater or wherever. thabends
So the Duet is without a doubt the way to go? I've read only good things about it. The only thing that confuses me is the connectivity. How does the breakout cable work? Is there only one option, or can you buy to fit your needs? CBA713
Only one option, unless you want to get a Breakout Box off of eBay or wherever. Not necessary though, no matter what you're told. The cable has two unbalanced outs, two balanced XLR ins, and two instrument ins. You can record two sources at a time, any combination of the ins. I record more sources than the few things you've stated you'll be recording, and I've been 100% pleased with the ease of use, sound quality, and... uh, ease of use. thabends
Perfect, I'll more than likely be picking one up. On Apogee's website under the Compatibility for the Duet, it only has Garageband and Logic Pro listed...it will work with Logic Express, right? fisherking
i'm collaborating now with someone who has logic express, the duet, and a really-cheap m-audio midi interface, and all is well. the duet sounds great, works great...
David Nahmani
Yes, it will work just great with Logic Express. It's really the absolute best option in this price range. A no-brainer.
