Bought Mac with Logic Pro 8 but has no software instruments

I have recently bought a Power Mac G5 complete with Logic Pro 8 preinstalled. However, when I came to use Logic I noticed that the software instruments and the plug-in presets were never installed. I contacted the guy who sold it to me and he says that he never installed all the other things because he didn't use them and doesn't have the disc any more.

I bought Logic because of the software instruments and need to get hold of them asap for my compositions. It would really help to have some of the presets for some of the plug-ins, too.

Does anyone know what my best option is to get hold of these? Is it possible for me to buy/find a disc that has just these things on them and install them to my copy of Logic?

Thanks,

Joe.

I'm afraid you just got hosed. You bought a car without looking under the hood whether or not the engine was there - and it turns out it isn't. For all you know the guy is pre-installing Logic 8 on tons of macs so he can sell them at a premium. That's illegal. So... you just bought an illegal car that doesn't have an engine. You can't very well turn to the manufacturer to ask them for a new engine - even if you're willing to pay for it now.

Without the discs I would think your only option is to buy the program. As Logic 9 is already out you can probably find 8 really cheap (if anywhere still has it available; try ebay). Otherwise you may be able to get replacement cd's, but only if you have the serial number (and it is a legit one). Call APPLE and they will let you know if this is a possibility (and what you need to have in order to do it, if so).

I'd be careful asking about where to 'find' a program as that sounds a lot like piracy and any legit forum (this one included) will frown on that a lot (beside the fact that it is illegal and possibly immoral)... And along those lines I would guess that if the guy didn't install any sofware instruments and doesn't have the disks (it's a pretty large box set so a bit difficult to misplace) he eaither sold it seperately (therefore the serial is not valid for you) or it was a pirated version in the first place...

Good luck. Please post back with how it works out for you...

Cheers guys. I didn't realise that pre-installed software was illegal. I asked the guy when I bought it if it was legal and he said it was I just can't upgrade it. All sounds pretty dodgy now. Probably going to try to buy a copy of Logic 8 on eBay like you suggested. Any advice on making sure that is legit?

Cheers,

Joe.

Cheers guys. I didn't realise that pre-installed software was illegal.

It's not illegal in itself, it's just a great way for someone to illegally sell multiple copies of the same license. I'm not saying that's what that guy did for sure, but it could have been. But if he didn't give you the content DVDs along with the software, there's not much you can do, save from buying the whole software again.

If you are 100% confident that you are the owner of a legal license of the software, then I suppose you could simply try to find the content on your own (for example from a friend who owns the same software), and use that content with your legal license.

Just ordered Logic Express 9 off the apple site. Sorted.

Express only has a fraction of the content Pro has though. It has 1,200 Loops, 1,000 sampled instruments and 2,500 plug-in presets. Pro has 20,000 Loops, 1,700 sampled instruments and 4,500 plug-in presets.

Yes I agree but can't afford Pro just yet. It's a start.

  • 2 weeks later...

Plus it's a lot to absorb right off the bat anyway. As a matter of fact I decided to learn features of Logic 8 I hadn't explored yet, instead of upgrading to L9 and it is like having a whole new version all over again (but I have only been with Logic for about 6 months or so, so there was a lot still to cover...

You can always upgrade to pro later.
