edstate
I'm thinking about getting the Alesis one.. I like the THEORY behind it. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001OXEDA0/ref=ox_ya_oh_product Anyone use one? It says it's 44.1 & 16bit. How's the sound? Anything to look out for? Good settings? Etc? Matt Mayfield
Off the top of my head, I don't think it's a good idea and I think you'd be better off with a small audio interface that has a 1/4" input. Mainly because the 1/4" to USB cable would lead to MORE (not less) inconvenience with setting audio inputs, creating an Aggregate Device in Audio MIDI Setup, etc... It defeats the purpose of why you would even want it (simplicity).
edstate
Well... it arrived yesterday! First of all, it's really not that big of a deal, because you don't have to "create an aggregate device", etc. You just make sure "Generic USB Device" is selected in Sound in sysprefs (just like you would your audio interface). Then you select it in Logic. Easy breezy. The quality seems pretty good, too. I did an extensive a/b with my Edirol FA66, and I really couldn't tell any difference. But then again, my ears are far from professional. However, the only downside I'm noticing is the lag... there's a little bit more of a delay between strumming-and-sound then my FA66. Which seems odd, because the FA66 is 1/4"-in-FW-out. Whereas this chord is, well, just one chord. Maybe the A-D conversion in the cable is slow? Regardless, for $30 bucks this is actually a fairly convenient tool. If I want to take my laptop w/ me and work on some guitar tracks (scratch, most likely) it's obviously a lot easier than taking an audio interface as well.
