amusong
Have Macprovideo on Ultrabeat (for Logic 8 only) - says that of the 24+1 voices the top one (the +1) can be used as a bass addressable by all the midi keys to play a bass line. When I select the bass voice and press the appropriate key for that voice I get a bass note OK but when I press any other key the bass does not play, just the drum part for that key/voice. How do I get the bass to switch on and stay on when I play other notes on the keyboard? The video does not mention this.
Alan Shields
If I understand your post correctly you're looking in the wrong part of the keyboard for the bass notes. The first 24 notes (from C1-B2) are the drum sounds, the bass starts on the 25th note and can be played chromatically on the upper part of the keyboard - from C3 up. There is no need to change any voice to a bass sound. HTH, Alan.
amusong
Stunningly simple (and obvious) as most of these things are! I was using the caps lock keyboard and had just not worked my way up that far with the octave shifts. If I may follow up with a supplementary question.... Now that I have UB playing base lines how do I now record these as a pattern? I have tried simply putting them into the sequencer but all the notes I get are the same pitch, so that doesn't work. Can I put a bass pattern into UB? Or do I have to go back out to the piano roll editor and put them in note by note? I should mention that I don't have a midi controller keyboard yet but I am gong to go out and buy one tomorrow - not sure if this would make a difference to this issue or not? David Nahmani
It would be easier to program in the Piano Roll for sure. But in UB's step sequencer, you can program your note on the bass lane (all on the same pitch), then use the step automation (button at the left of the step sequencer row) to automate the pitch of each note (+2, -5 etc....). amusong
Thanks David. In that case I guess I am struggling to see what the benefit of having the bass capability within UB is at all. Why put it there? To get bass into a song it would seem easier just to do it outside UB entirely. Am I missing something?
David Nahmani
You don't have to use it if you don't like it. (I personally never use it).
