help with vocals

Hey all,

Looking for some help in leveling out some vocals on some tracks. Just starting using Logic and have a very basic setup (using a yamaha mic connected to a berhinger usb connection). We are a young band recording in a basement without much equipment but i'm fairly familiar with very basic recording setups. Right now we are using the amp designer to try and boost up the vocalist but even with eq and other settings the vocals (obviously) have a lackluster sound. I was just wondering if anyone had some suggestions for cheap or preferably free plugin for recording vocals, or some channel strip settings that give vocalists some gusto instead of the singing through a tin can feel. Also if anyone knows of some decent training books or sites that would help. Again fairly comfortable with basic recording but looking to gain some more knowledge on how to use some specific tools. Any suggestions help, not really needing a truly professional sound as of yet but we just want to sound clean and level as opposed to us preforming into a usb mic as a band into a single channel program without any eq.

When recording vocals the mic and the mic pre is a big thing.

So your yamaha and Behringer combo doesn't look very promising as a first impression.

Is that Yamaha a condenser mic?

Behringer is not considered a good brand for recording purposes.

What are you using anyways? Logic 8? A macbook?

we have a mac mini with 4gb of ram but only 2.0 ghz processor. Again I know we have a beyond basic setup but we aren't looking for production quality recordings as of yet. We have logic 9 express (young band recording in our basement). I realize we are a much lower quality then most using logic but basically what we want is a passable demo recording for friends and to hand out for gigs. I understand there probably isn't much to offer with our basic setup but even some suggestions to fill out the vocals or a vocal plugin would help somewhat. Please help out a small DIY band with any suggestions you have. No real need for detailed instructions just suggestions should help our situation!
