Tracking vocals with logic

I am tracking my first pop vocal session tomorrow. just a couple questions:

 

1. should i track the vocal with or without outboard compressor. LA2A?

 

2. if i apply compressor after session should i use the outboard LA2A or is there a plugin in Logic which will get me close.

hey.... depends on the singers mic technique.

If the mic technique is good then you can always insert it later.

if you do use it, be gentle though - i would generally not have more than around 3db-6db of reduction.

In general, because the LA2A is a classic and has a desirable vibe I would use it on the way in but very sparingly, Just enough to get the vibe. I wouldn't go more than 3db reduction.

It's possible you would want to use more at the mix stage but at this point you can easily A/B it with Logic's comps.
