Moving from a Kurzweil K2500 to Mainstage: Rack modules

Hello, forum!

I'm currently using a Kurzweil K2500 along with some rack modules. On my kurzweil, I have all the sounds I'm using programmed as setups. Setups can consist of internal sounds, or of no internal sound at all, only sending MIDI messages. So, I can play on a setup that has an internal sound, press the "next" button and get a setup with no internal sound that sends a MIDI program change to one of my rack modules, letting me swap between internal sounds and sounds on the rack modules with ease.

I would like to model this with mainstage 2. The product page on apple.com says that Mainstage 2 can transmit MIDI, new from version 1. Info on how this actually works is very sparse, though.

Since there's no trial version of Logic Pro, I was wondering if anyone that has a similar setup - controlling external rack modules with mainstage - could share some experiences.

Page 68 says this is possible, but it isn't clear to me if multiple, different program changes can be sent out to different external synths at the same time the patch is selected. For sure you can do one. Maybe someone else can clarify that.

You can have as many external channel strips per patch as you probably might need and each one can send out the program change to an individual MIDI port.

MainStage has special external instrument channel strips, which can be configured to send out different midi messages on patch change: program change, bank select, RSTART/RCONTINUE/RSTOP, and midi clock.

You can also route the audio back in through this external instrument channel strip, but this is of course optional.
