Laptop recommendation for Logic 9

Recommended Posts

I'm new to Mac computers. I am planning on purchasing a Macbook Pro and Logic Studio 9. What would you recommend as a Macbook Pro model for a really robust system (lots of plug-ins and low latency with virtual instruments). I currently have a PC based studio, but am looking at something that I could use both in the studio and when I play out.

Thank you,

Paul

I like the 15" that I looked at, and I'm fine with the price that I saw. However, the hard drive is 5400 rpm, and I'm not sure if this is an issue or not. I am planning on going with an Apogee Duet for an audio interface. I'm not sure about which Midi interface to get. I would like something that would at least be 2X2.

A 7200 rpm drive is always better. Depends on how busy your projects are.

Nowadays looks like the HD is the slowest component in a computer for audio or video work.

If you're gonna record to the laptop 1 track at a time I think you'll be fine.

If you're planning to record to an external HD, remember firewire is better than USB and that the Duet doesn't have a second firewire port for daisy-chaining and that the 17'' laptop is the only one now with an expansion card.

And that Logic doesn't like FAT32 (Windows and multi-platform) drives for recording purposes, they have to be formatted in Mac OSX Extended.

Would the slower hard drive affect latency in recording virtual instruments?

And, if I went with an external 7200 hard drive using firewire, would it be inferior to an internal 7200 drive?

Thank you for the information. Like I said, I've been a PC guy for years and years. I am very familiar with Sonar and using a PC for a DAW, but I know nothing about a Mac I'm afraid!!!
