Taybot
I'm trying to learn to record vocals in logic 8 but I noticed my vocal track is being recorded as a wav file. The book that is teaching me how to do this shows them being recorded as aiff. Doesn't wav files take up way more space? Should I be using AIF instead and also, how do I make it so my vocal takes become AIF instead of WAV? Thanks a bunch!
Eric Cardenas
Wav or Aiff are almost identical in space. You won't have to change anything. But if you want to do it anyway: Preferences > Audio > General > Recording File Type.
Taybot
nice thanks! so are they almost identical in quality as well? Or what is the difference between them?
David Nahmani
They're just two different formats containing the exact same PCM audio data (uncompressed). It doesn't matter which you choose, really. WAV has automatic timestamp which can be useful when you're using the same file in another session or another software and you want to place the audio file at the correct SMPTE. MikeShapiro
nice thanks! so are they almost identical in quality as well? Or what is the difference between them? Quality-wise they are identical. They differ primarily in terms of the hidden details of how they represent audio data. That said, wav files are a little more universally compatible (in that aif is Apple-centric) and can offer timestamping of audio data, which is useful when importing files from Protools into Logic. Though these benefits may not immediately impact you, I would say that given a choice between the two, you might as well go with wav files.
