psanderson
I have a MIDI project successfully recorded and edited in Logic Express 8.0. The project uses just one software instrument (Piano), on MIDI channel 1. 80% of the score looks perfect with the default layout split point of C3. The sections with both hands above or below the split point of C3 appear as one hand (all note stems in one direction tied to a single beam). If I highlight an editable section and attempt to set a different split point (Layout>Staff Styles, Split Point) the selected split point affects the entire score. How do I create Classical style piano scores for print out? I would not be concerned if it would alter the MIDI performance as they could be saved as separate files. ski
There are several methods for doing this without having to alter anything about your score. Here's one: • Set a split point in the score preferences that will more or less work for a majority of the score. If there isn't one, just approximate what a good split point note would be, keeping in mind that the note you pick will be the bottom-most note displayed in the RH • Change the Staff Style to Piano 1/3 • Invoke Functions > Note Events > Assign Channel Based on Score Split Voila, all treble notes will be on Ch. 1, all bass notes will be on Ch.3. At this point I recommend setting up two key commands: Event Channel +1 Event Channel -1 You can now go about moving notes on the wrong staff to the right staff by hitting the appropriate key the required number of times (hitting Event+ twice to move a treble note to the bass, or hitting Event- twice to move a bass note to the treble). In general, do NOT use the Voice/Staff Assignment functions to move notes from staff to staff. If your piece is not "polyphonic" (meaning that it doesn't require more than 2 voices to be notated) I suggest following the same procedure except FIRST modify the Piano 1/3 staff style so that the bass staff is on channel 2. Then use the Assign Channel function as described above. Now if a note is in the wrong staff you'll only have to hit the Event+ or Event- key commands once instead of twice. Your sustain pedal markings (if any) will likely now appear in the middle of the grand staff. Post back if you want to know how to deal with that. This approach is good, although my preferred method is a little bit different. But what I described above is likely the easiest method.
psanderson
Thanks for your timely reply. However I am not able to make your suggestion work. In-spite of setting up the key command any attempt to move the notes results in the - key playing the selected note or the + key resulting in an error "boop". Reading your post with greater attention to detail I see that you discuss moving notes from one staff to another. What I have is both hands playing in the treble clef and the bass clef. Logic express scores any thing above middle C as one hand and anything below middle C as one hand. To differentiate the hands the note stems should be in opposite directions. I am new to Logic Express and have probably missed something in these many hours I have spent scouring the manual. I need a way to make complicated piano scores that are understandable to other pianists. Are there any online tutorials that cover working with scores? Thanks again for your time, Paul Anderson
ski
I must say that I don't know about the difference in capabilities between Express and Pro versions of Logic. I assumed that both versions had equal capabilities in this regard but then again it's possible that the method I described above won't apply. And unfortunately I don't have a copy of Express to try out.
Beer Moth
Use Piano 1,2+3,then assign LH notes in treble clef to Ch2 in the Event editor (having selected them). Ch 3 for LH bass. Stems up/down can be set in Score style and/or note attributes. HTH
psanderson
Thanks HTH for your reply. With each post I gain further insight into Logic Express 8.0. I think I have determined why the suggestions you and McMix have given me are not working. Each attempt to change the "score style" from the default "piano" has failed. Following the manual instructions for selecting a region, changing score style, creating new score style, editing regions etc. has gotten me no where. What am I missing?
