Logic & Axiom 61 why no aftertouch?

Ok. I´m new to Axiom and a pretty basic Logic user...so I´m quite "midi-retarded" But I need to know this! I bought Axiom 61 because of its aftertouch function, and earlier when I´ve played things in Logic with Novation controllers aftertouch has been a trusted companion.

But with my new setup I have absolutely no aftertouch whatsoever on any instrument! What to do? Is there a global setup for this in Logic, cause from what I´ve read I will not have to setup Axiom for this?

Any idea guys? How to get some aftertouch action in Logic 9?

First, check your Project Settings > MIDI > Input Filter to ensure that aftertouch (a/t) information isn't being filtered. If it's not being filtered, then do one more test: lean in on the keyboard and look at the MIDI monitor in the Transport. If you don't see a/t data coming in then you'd have to turn on something in the Novation to output it.

So once you're sure that a/t isn't being filtered AND your keyboard is actually outputting a/t, and you're still not getting any response from the instrument, then it's likely because the sounds you're choosing aren't programmed to respond to it. For sure, most if not all of the EXS-24 sounds that come stock with Logic do not respond to a/t. And while ES-2 and EXS-24 have the capability of responding to a/t, you'll have to program the effect yourself. Meanwhile, ES1, ESM, and ESP - to name three - do not respond to a/t under any circumstances.

i have a feeling its just the patches you're using.

open up the es2. load up a preset. then in the mod matrix set it so it looks like this.

then hold a note/chord and push down on the aftertouch and see if the pitch goes up. this will show aftertouch works.

if this doesnt then make sure the activity monitor is showing activity.

is the axioms screen showing a load of numbers rapidly going up to 127ish when you press down on aftertouch?

Thanks for the tips guys! The filtering is off course off Ski...a bit disappointing though that aftertouch is largely ignored in the logic instruments.

And Organsymphony; that was a great tip that certainly showed tha Axiom was sending aftertouch messages! Thanks :-)

I wouldn't say ignored. Of the 13 instruments included with Logic, 6 of them don't have channel aftertouch available as a standard mod source, but you can use the Learn function to have Touch control any parameter you like, even in those instruments.

I dunno Señor Ocho, That sounds pretty much 'ignored' to me. And trust me, I know 'ignored' when I see it. Take this thread for instance...

But I digress.

Anyway, your suggestion to use the Learn function to get a/t to control things is fiendishly clever. Even useful!

I wasn't ignoring you, but I can, ya know, if you want.

It's tricky though. You have to depress your key, then activate learn, lean on the key, then deactivate learn before releasing the key. This way it doesn't capture the actual note message.
