Chimpotle
Hey - I dont know anything about MXL mics, and am by no means an expert on mics, but it might help if you gave a little more info - Whats your budget? Looks like the neighborhood of $200? Is there a reason you're set on MXL? Are you looking to record in stereo? Or guitar and vocals simultaneously? People here can probably give you a ton of recommendations and their experiences with mics in the $200 range, but i'm not sure a lot of people would have experience with all of the mics you listed... GusMachado
Well, there's a problem. Because here in Brazil, mxl are very popular and easy to find and buy. My budget is about 250 dollars, or less, because, you know there is always taxes on it. I heard a lot of good recommendations about MXL, in relationship cost/benefits, but I'm open to another brands if I can find it in a good price at local market. All I need is have the option to record stereo on two separate channels, or even record voice and guitar at the same time. I play folk, so I need my guitar sounding very vivid. Hope to hear from you guys soon.
triplets
I use MXL mics and I can tell you this: V6 is great for clean recordings, just enough coloring 2001 is kinda trebly. 2003 might be a good option. The V67N is a very good condenser, the whole V67 series is good. The one mic that sounds amazing for guitars, especially electric, is the Fox and it's dirt cheap, but dynamic. I wasn't too thrilled about the 990 or 991, at least for electric guitars. I haven't tried the 550 or 551, but looking at the frequency response diagram, it has a huge boost on the high frequencies, so you wanna have a look at those diagrams to have an idea how much the mic colors the sound. I use the Genesis for vocals, it's their flagship tube mic, very rich sound, makes the vocals cut. We did this video for MXL, check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaSEr8ZvAr4
GusMachado
Genesis, or even V67 series are a little expensive for my budget. What I have to buy is a 990/ 991 ou even 550/551, or just one mic instead of a kit? Which should I buy?

triplets
Like I said. Look at the frequency diagrams included in their website, so you have an idea what frequencies are boosted on the mic. You can go to the Neumann site and look at their diagrams and compare. MXL buys the same capsules Neumann does from China, the rest is quality assurance and marketing.
